Well then I think you need to decide if it's fiction or memoir. It can't be both. And yes, edits can be a problem if you are already refusing changes that could make a story stronger. #askagent

If it's fiction it's fiction and you need to not be afraid to fictionalize. I often find that's the struggle authors have with taking a "real story" they get caught up in what really happened and forget that it's fiction. #askagent

Is this nonfiction? Are they critical to the story? If they aren't critical to the story and the progression of the story I'm not sure you need to include the information in the query. Would it need to be on cover copy? #querytip #askagent

You can definitely still look for an agent, but you might run into difficulties because parts of the book have already been sold. That makes it harder for the publisher, but without knowing all details it's hard to say #askagent

It comes down to knowing who the audience is for your book. Who is reading your book and what else are they reading then look at what genre they are, but part of learning the business of being an author is understanding genres. #askagent

That being said, if I find a terrific self-published book what I'll do is contact the author and see if she's interested in traditional publishing and ask her to send her next book. #askagent

I might and I have and it's happened, but that was also years ago and self-publishing was different. It's a harder transition to take an already published book traditional now. #askagent

As an author you likely won't. Part of my job is to talk with editors all the time to find out what they're looking for and what they're tired of. I get a sense of what's selling, what's hot, and what's not. #askagent
