#querytip Remember when you’re sending a query, you’re pitching ONE book—not a series! Telling me your book is the first in a series is fine, but the query itself needs to be focused on ONE book.

Show me it has an arc and conflict of its own!

Ooh I see on QT some people are worried abt me responding to queries that came in after yours.
To clear it up: I respond to EVERY query that comes in thru QueryManager.
I sometimes look at JUST YA or SF or whatever in a day, so not always perfectly in receipt order. #querytip

Sometimes in submissions, people say, "your love of X, Y, and Z make you the perfect fit," & I have NEVER said I like those things and sometimes actively dislike them, and it is amazing. Loves, be careful, don't make those sweeping statements. Do your research. #subtip #querytip

Don't forget--I'm closing to queries on December 1st, and won't be opening again until January 15th, 2019! Get those queries in! #querytip

Hello! If you are an illustrator querying an agent or editor, please also link to your website &/or portfolio! Your script is GREAT, but I want to see your art, too, please! #querytip #subtip

#querytip #amquerying Put the title of your manuscript in the the subject line of your query email. Makes it easier to find. Unless of course the agent or editor has other guideline specifics.

Reading submissions, I’m struck by the potential I see every day. Despite what your authorial insecurities might tell you, agents are not gleefully tossing projects in the bin. Most of my rejections are because the author and/or project isn’t ready. #querytip

When you tell me your book is MG/YA, it sends the message that you haven't done enough research. Remember, your book can only sit on one shelf. So which one is it? #querytip

Similarly, if you do query one agent, don't immediately send a followup email saying, "Sorry, I actually meant this one." If the person in submissions is me, the agent will think it's funny. If it's someone else, you know... they may not. #subtip #querytip Be intentional, please.

#querytip If an agent rejects you because of your word count, please don’t resubmit your query with the exact same pages and word count, only changing your query to now list all of the ridiculous reasons the agent is supposedly wrong and you are supposedly right. #Nope

#Querytip when you receive a rejection try to maintain a level of professionalism when writing a response (note: a response is not necessary). Insulting someone just shows that the agent made the right decision in rejecting you. #thinkfirst
