So it's very common for writers to ask why agents don't give feedback. The answer, usually, is that we're busy--but that's hard to grasp on a concrete level. Today, the lovely and talented @BenFaulknerEd mentioned reading tons, and out of curiosity, I did the math to compare. Also, the reply emails that ask me to recommend other agents? I get a lot of those. Those don’t get answered. That’s your homework. Not mine. #querytip

Sometimes I'll hear a book criticized because the protagonist is "unlikeable." Here's the thing: UNLIKEABLE IS TOTALLY FINE. We don't need to be BFFs with the main character. We just need to be able to emotionally invest in & relate to them.Fantastic advice for those of you writing unlikeable characters or striving for anti-heroes! #amwriting #amediting #amquerying #querytip

#QueryTip If you receive a revise and resubmit request, do more than quick fixes. Take time to significantly rewrite, revise, and polish. Submit your very best work. #amwriting #amrevising #amquerying

#QueryTip When researching agents, some questions to consider. Are they editorial? How much will they expect you to revise? Do their expectations mesh with yours? What is their communication style? How much will they share with you? #amquerying

Alright! Officially closed to queries. The 102 people who queried at the tail end of January are the last ones I’ll read until after I’m back from maternity leave. And I am still reviewing requested material. #querytip #amagenting

Many fantasy submissions focus too much on unique worldbuilding and not enough character. Readers want to know what happens to a character, first and foremost. The worldbuilding is important - but it should compliment and always be in service to character and plot #1st5pagesI see this crutch a lot in my inbox. The writer pitches the world, with barely a mention of the character I'm supposed to follow and befriend. We can discover the world together throughout the narrative later -- entice me with the character and plot. #1st5pages #querytip

OKAY I HAVE AN IMPORTANT THREAD FOR YOU about fighting in ballgowns! I will illustrate with Disney Princess gifs, because why not.First, you can absolutely swordfight in a dress. Some dresses are great to swordfight in, and some are not so great.
Ok, this is brilliant, entertaining, and SUPER informative. Take note, #writers! #amwriting #amediting #querytip #amquerying
