@BookEndsJessica Sorry, should have said it's a writers' site for critique. I'm hoping you will settle a long-running debate! #askagentOoooooh!!! That's totally different. A writers site for critique would certainly not be seen as having previously published the work. In fact I don't even see a need to tell an agent or editor. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Hi Jessica - how important is a synopsis when querying agents for fiction? #askagentCritical. I ask for a synopsis every time I request material so you better have one ready before you even query. #askagent

#askagent Do you look at an author's social media when considering offering rep? What would turn you off or make you more likely to offer rep?Definitely racist comments would change my mind #askagent

#askagent Do you look at an author's social media when considering offering rep? What would turn you off or make you more likely to offer rep?I usually do, but I don't know that a social media site has made a difference in my decision to offer. #askagent. I suppose if an author is really negative I might change my mind.

#askagent Does a manuscript count as published if it's posted on a password-protected site, assuming anybody can sign up for a password? That would depend on the site, the reach of the site, the purpose of the site and, ultimately, how the publisher feels about it. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Jessica: Is there an appropriate way to follow up with an agent if you haven’t heard anything? Or is it better to assume the answer is no? #askagentJust remember to give the title, your name and any other information in your status request. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Jessica: Is there an appropriate way to follow up with an agent if you haven’t heard anything? Or is it better to assume the answer is no? #askagentKnow the timeline by which they say they respond, give it a week beyond the timeline & simply email (or in the case of @bookendslit reply through Query Manager) & ask for a status update. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Jessica: Is there an appropriate way to follow up with an agent if you haven’t heard anything? Or is it better to assume the answer is no? #askagentSome agents have the "no answer means no" policy. @bookendslit doesn't. #askagent

If you are lucky enough to have eight agents reading your full manuscript... and then inspiration strikes and you implement the idea and it dramatically improves the book... Should you contact them and ask to substitute the new version? Or is that just too annoying?? #askagentI would not ask if you can send without attaching. Don’t bog down agents with too much back & forth. #askagent

They can decide which to read. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica @AgentJessicaA Thank you so much for taking questions! Is it okay *not* to nudge an agent who has a full even after months? I worry that I'll seem disinterested if I don't reach out but I'm just trying to be patient. #askagentI think if you're not comfortable nudging that's fine too. Just keep querying & also, remember when it's important to take control of your own career. #askagent

Are potential authors getting more whiny? If so, how do you deal? The longer I query, the more I see agents having to tiptoe. I saw a tweet where an agent complained about queries starting "i know you probably wont read this.." and I'm exhausted just thinking about it. #askagent
Nah. Authors are like anyone else in the world. Some are whiny, some are nasty, most are wonderful and kind. #askagent

#BookEndsChat #askagent do you recommend having a website/author page even before querying an agent for your first book? Is that presumptuousness, confidence, a bad/good plan? Thanks!I don't think you need a website, but you do need a social media presence. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #AskAgent Are you impressed by descriptive writing in a query? Or would you rather just have the characters, setting, arcs, stakes etc put as simply and clearly as possible? Asking for a friend ...I like to hear the voice in a query, but it's more important for me to get sucked in enough to want to read the book. Like back cover copy. #askagent
