#querytip: If you've written a big 'world might end' type book, then your stakes should have two levels: yes, the fact that the world might end, but ALSO (and arguably more importantly...) what is at stake FOR YOUR CHARACTER?

#Querytip: be clear about what you protagonist WANTS. It's not enough to know what happens to them. I need to know who they are and what they want so that I can appreciate what is DRIVING the story (hint: it should be your character!)

Lately I've been getting a lot of queries comping To Kill a Mockingbird... please try to pick comp titles from the last few years! We all know the classics too, but agents need a sense that your book will fit into the contemporary market. #querytip #amquerying #writingcommunity

#QueryTip Know category, genre, and word count, as well as 2-3 recent comps, published in the last three years with strong sales: “[TITLE] is [COMP] meets [COMP] with ________ of [COMP]." Then explain how the book fits into the market + reader appeal. #amquerying

If you are a #querying author and wonder whether or not I accept M/F, F/F, M/M, non-binary, or any combination thereof, the answer is absolutely. Love is love. As long as they are consenting adults and the novel fits what I'm looking for, I'm all in. #querytip

Lastly, a #QueryTip:

Send queries in rounds, adhering to each agent’s submission guidelines. Don’t send all at once. Give yourself time between each submission round to rethink your strategy and pitch, revise, etc.

When querying a YA, don't lead with the moral/lesson of your novel. First, it's telling us instead of showing us, and second, a novel for teens shouldn't feel like a lesson--they'll see right through it, and stop reading--so your query shouldn't either. #querytip #writetip
