I have to say this about attempting to read 300+ queries in a row: The people who boil down their plot to 'book jacket' status are currently my favs. #querytip Remember, agents are usually sitting down to read lots of queries, not just your one so stand out being short & sweet.

Please follow submissions guidelines. They vary from agency to agency, but they always are the way they are for a reason. Please follow them. My work life is organized in a very specific way for a reason. Thank you. #querytip #subtip

Authors, please do not have someone (a lawyer, manager, etc) submit your query on your behalf. I promise I will read it even if you've never written or been published before. I'm honestly less inclined to read it if you're not sending it yourself. #querytip

A note on queries for urban fantasy novels whether for middle grade, young adult or adult readers...

Urban fantasy is "our world + magic." Be clear in your query - do the humans (muggles/ normals/ whatever) KNOW that there is magic? Or, is magic a secret.

Another thing I'm seeing are a lot of books that are "series" where the first is basically just the build-up to the actual story in book 2. Ultimately, an entire "back story" book.
Don't wait for book 2 for all the good stuff to happen.

5) People sending pages without a query or synopsis - just pages
6) Books that list their genre as two completely different thing (ex: MG & WF)
7) The "generic" query - meaning it doesn't even include my name - just says "Query" at the top
