There are, of course, exceptions, such as epistolary novels through a series of letters or (as seen more recently) exchanges in text messages. Any rule can be broken, so long as it's broken well and the craft renders highly effective results. #subtips

A story that has no narrative keeps the reader from experiencing the story directly as we can never get close enough to the character. Similarly, a story that has almost no dialogue will cut the reader off from everything that occurs outside of the mind of the character. #subtips

Getting to know all those internal layers of a MC secures reader investment into the plight of the character. Experiencing the inner thoughts and emotions through the character's observations and reactions helps create a strong emotional pull. #subtips
