A lot of first chapters begin with an explanation of how the character got to where they are. (Even if it's not in a "freeze frame!" obvious kind of way.) Cut the boring stuff. Let them be in the moment and the reader will catch up. #querytip

If you story features a villain/antagonist that's a rapist, then it's probably not for me. #querytip

Read up on who you are submitting to. If agented, read up on who your agent is submitting you to. Know whether a publisher is right for you BEFORE sending them material. #querytip

#querytip reminder: PLEASE update agents w/ your materials when you get an offer of rep. It’s so discouraging when you get excited about a project then learn the author accepted an offer without updating. Especially since we’re often using nights/wknd time to keep up w/ queries

Fact - second books are HARD. You may have spent years working on book 1, but that amount of time is often not possible for book 2. So start thinking about book 2 ASAP so it doesn't sneak up on you! #pubtip
