I think the thing I'd like to see less of in a query letter is the term "coming-of-age" to describe a YA manuscript. I've seen this term at least 30 times today. If it's YA, it's understood to be coming-of-age. #querytip

I've seen the term "g*psy" show up in a few queries. This is a derogatory term, along with "quadroon" and "octaroon." Please stop using them. #querytip

#querytip Believe it or not, I don't take pleasure in writing rejections as an agent and I always try to be constructive in my emails. I love it when authors return the email with a positive/optimistic reaction and I will actually save their email to a folder.

Shake things up. Break a mold. Try something new in your genre. Be daring. I reject MANY well-written manuscripts because the writing/tropes/angle is so stale/redundant for me, and I have piles of similarly structured stories in my query box. /1

Hello, writers! Science fiction and fantasy novels now typically contain female characters. You don't have to specify that you've written about women. In fact, this makes you sound far less hip! #querytip

a small #querytip: when replying to a full request I've seen authors adding the original query to the front of the word doc. this helps me a lot as the gap between requesting and reviewing a manuscript can often mean I lose track of why I asked for it. it's nice to have context.
