@UweStenderPhD @thewritinghippo Are there extra hoops to jump if you don’t live in the West? Does it affect one’s chances of getting an agent/publisher?Not with me. I cannot speak for others.

@UweStenderPhD @thewritinghippo For YA contemporaries, what would you consider to be too short?Probably less than 50 K.

@UweStenderPhD @thewritinghippo I do have a question. There seems to be conflicting info out there on whether you should mention in your query if you've been published say by a small independent publisher in the past (5+yrs. ago). I was told that would work against an author in querying now.I don't think it helps, but I don't think it hurts, either.

@UweStenderPhD @thewritinghippo When considering a ms that has come back to you because you offered an R&R, what would make you pass?If it did not adequately address my previous concerns.

@UweStenderPhD @WriteOnCon Will do! I’ll start querying at the end of the summer! I know Ask an agent is done but last question: that synopsis and query letter writing process is almost harder than writing the book. Tips on voice for each and how to make it the best?I don't require a synopsis, and I like short queries. There are plenty tips googleable, best of luck!

@UweStenderPhD How realistic is it to aspire to a full-time writing career? It's very tough, but possible. It's a competitive field ripe with unpredictability. You could substitute writing career with singing career, professional sports career, acting career etc. and the odds are somewhat comparable.

@UweStenderPhD Seriously, how does one survive (i.e. continue writing) rejection after rejection?Don't take them personal. Over the years, I have received thousands of rejections. You just keep plucking along, or you could quit. But if you love writing, quitting should never be an option.

@UweStenderPhD I have another one, if that’s okay, Uwe. :)Comp titles. Do you have advice on how to chose them? Are you looking for similar voice, similar plot, something else?
Ask as many questions as you want to. Yes and yes. Similar feel. It's like Netflix recommending another series based on what you watched before.

@UweStenderPhD In your experience, what makes a successful in-person pitch? I just registered for my first writers' conference and am nervous/excited to have face-to-face time with an agent. #askagentDon't be nervous, enjoy the experience, and don't ramble. Allow for a conversation with the agent. It will be fine.

@UweStenderPhD How important is having an established social media presence/blog following/internet thing to how successful an agent/publisher believes a book will be?In fiction I could not care less though it won't hurt to have a platform. In non fiction it is one of THE most important thing.

@UweStenderPhD Is there a right or wrong way to display text messages in a manuscript? It's the best I can do. apvschicago.com/2018/07/stylin…

@UweStenderPhD How important is it for a querying writer to have multiple projects available should an agent ask what else they’re working on? Would not having a second completed manuscript yet be a deal breaker? Not to me. I am interested in the manuscript at hand.

@UweStenderPhD If a writer writes multiple genres -- and subsequently has multiple voices -- would you recommend they write under the same name, variations of their name, or pen names? (SO happy I made this #askagent!)I would cross that bridge once you reach it. There are too many details to discuss via Twitter. But if you are, for instance, known for being a successful MG writer, you will want to use a pen name for your, for instance, adult erotic romance.

@UweStenderPhD Hi again. I have a two-part question. What advice do you have for a multi-genre writer to give each enough time and attention to reach the ultimate goal of publication and earning an agent? And is there one book you advise writers to read to better understand the process?I believe that if you do multiple things, you are still better in one over the others. I would focus on that <in your case> genre first. What process are you referring to? The process of getting an agent?

@UweStenderPhD @ a conference, had an anonymous critique of 1st 10 pgs of wip by a panel. Chatting later @ party, editor from Putnam super-excited to learn pgs were mine and wanted full. Wip only 20% done. No agent yet. She gave me her card. ? appropriate follow up process when wip done?I would remind the editor of what you just described and connect her to your agent at that time.

@UweStenderPhD @DanaLDavis #askagent A project is rejected but suggestions are made to revise, will you look at the revised project before another project, or does the revised project go to the bottom of the pile?Client projects come first.

Susan Burdorf @sburdorf
@UweStenderPhD @DanaLDavis #askagent How many edits do you suggest a writer do before submitting to you? And do you request proof of edits? There is no magic number of edits. If the book is great, it is great. Proof of edits?!? I don't even know what that means or is about.

@UweStenderPhD I know queries are typically serious, but what do you think of serious but humorous queries? It, like everything, depends on the execution.

MeBello @BelloMariellen
@UweStenderPhD Hello! For a new writer, do you think I should query more often to new agents or the more established ones at an agency, assuming they both are interested in my genre?Honestly, I don't think it makes a difference. I know that at @triadaus, we are all equally greedy for great talent.
