Hard truth (a short 🧵): I have to reject really amazing sounding books everyday. Think about it this way, if you were handed 100+ books a week (every week) could you realistically read them all? … #QueryTip #WritingCommunity

@CyLantyca @LisaGreenEdito2 Mood. mines 195kHonestly, that's a bit long no matter what. I'd seriously look at either editing down toward 100 as far as possible or seeing if it can really be 2 books. FYI #querytip

Start your story clearly. Confusion can be a strong mood to start some scenes, but in your first pages, your reader needs to anchor into a distinct sense of place& character w/ as few speed bumps as possible. Be decisive. Show through voice&opinion.

I'm elbow-deep in our slush pile today, so expect some #QueryTips over the next little while. The first may seem intuitive to some of you, but if your book is previously published (even for free), it often isn't eligible for agent representation! #WritingCommunityThis includes Kindle Unlimited, and sometimes even platforms like Wattpad. You can't acquire a book FOR publication if the book IS published, my pals. #QueryTip

#QueryTip for Author Bios
Whatever you include in your bio, be truthful. Don’t embellish or stretch the truth. (Agents will know. They will check.)
It's okay to simply say: "I am a writer based in [location]. [TITLE] is my first novel."

Add a clever, memorable last line about yourself that ties you to your story.
Ex. "Like [CHARACTER], I fought in a Golden Gloves championship against a boxer who would later go pro. I lasted a minute and 36 seconds before she broke my nose."

#QueryTip Why Write a Log Line?
It’s important to be able to pitch your story in a single sentence
Hint: If you can’t, then the project might be overly complicated, abstract, or not fully formed. (aka your draft is too early for prime time)
