I've seen an increasing # of queries in my inbox w/ word counts well over 200K. There are word count standards for a reason & hitting so high above them isn't doing you any favors. Getting that # down to standards could be the difference between a yes & no #Querytip #amwriting

If you're a person of color or from an underrepresented group, make it clear early in your query even if it has nothing to do with your book project. Agents & publishers are looking for projects by underrep authors. #querytip

If you’ve queried me before, feel free to query me again with a new manuscript. I’ve taken on clients’ book 2 or 3. It shows you have perseverance, tenacity, and a knowledge of the industry, that you don’t take it personally, because it’s not personal.

3/3 #querytip Agency websites typically list what each agent there wants. It will only help you if you target an agent who wants what you write. If you then want to send it to another at that agency & are unsure you should, just ask if it’s ok. #amquerying good luck! 👍🏻

1/3 #querytip Please don’t query every agent at a particular agency in one email. First, we have multiple agents because we don’t all read the same book types. Why would you want to query someone who reads predominantly non-fiction when you write sci-fi, for example? #amquerying

#querytip: I have recently noticed a lot of queries that do a great job of outlining the action plot, but neglect to delve into the personal stakes and emotional arcs.

As an agent who loves connecting with characters, this is information I'd love to see in the pitch!

I offer R&Rs on occasion & am always happy to see revised queries (even if I haven’t offered an R&R, I’m okay w re-queries). But if you do this, you need to tell me what you changed in your query letter! Tell me about all that revision work you did, I want to hear it! #QueryTip

Friendly reminder that if you are querying, wait at least 6 months before deciding to self-publish… and if you do, follow up with the agents or publishers you queried with to withdraw your application before you self-publish in case one of them is interested. #querytip

Things that will stop me from offering on even the best novel:
1. It's NOT in the genres I acquire.
2. The author seems unopen and unwilling to revise.
3. The author is not interested in continuing to write in this genre
4. Hostile social media posts.
