It's not a "fictional writing project". It's a book. A manuscript. A novel. Own your blood, sweat, and ink. #querytip

#querytip It's nice to know your motivation for writing the book, or what exactly you're looking for in an agent. But save these details for THE CALL. Don't waste your precious space in a query. Agents want to learn about your book, first and foremost.

Just opened 6 queries in a row that began with rhetorical questions. Please, don't do this. It leaves the query feeling hook-less (my dumb word for uninteresting) and takes up space. #querytip

The third thing I look for when reading fiction queries: pacing. This is hard to explain but there needs to be the right level of detail and structure/ organization to drive plot/ character development. Too much detail and you can get bogged down. #querytip #writing

The second thing I look for when reading fiction queries: a developed sense of place. Make me feel like I’m right there with your character. Like I can smell and see and touch the world she or he lives in. #querytip #writing

The number one thing I look for when reading fiction queries is voice. To me, voice is something distinct and rich, words only you can write, dialogue that clearly belongs to your character. A strong voice commands my attention. #querytip #writing

#querytip I’m not the agent to send manuscripts featuring marital affairs. Yes, they happen but I just don’t like anything having MCs cheating in the storyline. Unless it’s at cards.

#querytip I'd advise waiting until after the New Year to query at this point. You can definitely still submit if you feel this burning need to send it out, but just know that your MS will become part of the massive logjam that is 10 days' worth of unread emails.

Remember to follow submission guidelines, #amquerying writers! It's always such a bummer to get a query with no pages attached, or pages with no query. I can't make a decision based on an incomplete submission. #querytip
