My biggest and best #pubtip for querying authors: always, ALWAYS look at an agent's listing on Absolute Write. Someone might seem professional because there's a lot of ways to hide scams in this biz. Read the forums.

When #amquerying, don't mention you researched an agent & chose her because of A, B, & C, unless A, B, & C are actually true. Kinda defeats the purpose otherwise. Just sayin'... Don't make stuff up to impress. Don't use form "personalized" queries. We see through them. #pubtip

Your work isn't done when you first type "The end". In fact, no one should see your first draft but you. Self-editing & revising before sending your ms to critique & submission is important. Put your book aside for a few days & then read. Flaws will jump out at you.

#pubtip Don't immediately accept an offer of rep, even if it's your dream agent. You'll do yourself a disservice. Take a week to contact other agents. See if there's more interest, even if just to put first offer into context. Don't give up the opportunity to weigh all options.

#pubtip Don't give an agent or editor a reason to reject you. Here's a hint...follow the submission guidelines and do what we ask. There is a reason we ask for the material a certain way.

Acquiring, writing, editing, or agenting in one genre doesn't mean you can't acquire, write, edit, or agent in another genre. Your skills are transferable; it's unfair to be pigeonholed. So many editors, agents, etc. work across genres - you should be able to, too. #pubtip

Nonfiction writers, instead of asking other authors/experts to write a blurb for your book, ask them to promote your book to their followers in some way. Blurbs are a passive form of promotion that do very little to make readers aware of a new author. #pubtip

A rejection doesn’t necessarily mean the reviewing editor disliked the manuscript. A lot of factors come into deciding what to publish, including the publisher’s current list and market trends. #pubtip
