Thereās a lot of misinformation going around about how/why authors make the NYT list. Iād like to say take it with a grain of salt. If a book doesnāt hit the list, it doesnāt mean the publisher decided from day one that the book was going to fail and not support it. #pubtip

A thread! In the wake of the Lupine Grove fiasco, I am seeing a lot of ācompare notes with other clients of your agent to keep tabs on your agentā-type posts. And I get the impulse. HOWEVER. Maybe don't start from a place of doubt? This is SUCH A GOOD THREAD. Thank you for laying this out there, @molly_oneill. #pubtip #kidlit

Writers can get caught up w/ the # of sales an agent has when deciding on rep. Remember itās the quality of the sales that should count, not quantity. Anyone can sell books to bad and shady publishers, but a good agent knows how to be selective and get you the right deal #pubtip

#pubtip: it's a good thing when an agent offers to have you chat with their existing clients before you sign with them. Make sure you speak to their published AND unpublished authors!

My biggest and best #pubtip for querying authors: always, ALWAYS look at an agent's listing on Absolute Write. Someone might seem professional because there's a lot of ways to hide scams in this biz. Read the forums.Second #pubtip: Agency reputations and rankings can obscure a LOT of bad. If you're seeing agents talk only about these things and you're not hearing any authors tooting their horn, something is deeply wrong. ALWAYS ASK OTHER AUTHORS.

When #amquerying, don't mention you researched an agent & chose her because of A, B, & C, unless A, B, & C are actually true. Kinda defeats the purpose otherwise. Just sayin'... Don't make stuff up to impress. Don't use form "personalized" queries. We see through them. #pubtip

Your work isn't done when you first type "The end". In fact, no one should see your first draft but you. Self-editing & revising before sending your ms to critique & submission is important. Put your book aside for a few days & then read. Flaws will jump out at you.

#pubtip Make sure to know if the size of your book matches the current market or your genre. Size does matter.

#pubtip Don't immediately accept an offer of rep, even if it's your dream agent. You'll do yourself a disservice. Take a week to contact other agents. See if there's more interest, even if just to put first offer into context. Don't give up the opportunity to weigh all options.
Literary Agency
#pubtip Don't give an agent or editor a reason to reject you. Here's a hint...follow the submission guidelines and do what we ask. There is a reason we ask for the material a certain way.

@MarleneStringer I'm kind of thinking first few pages should be pretty in context even without a good query- like the writing should be solid all tge way through. But now I'm like "how does one even avoid that" in a query since thats its purpose?I think you misunderstand. Sometimes we receive pages -- just pages. No other info. It's like - guess the genre, the conflict, etc. You need a solid Q to set up the pages for a read. #pubtip

Acquiring, writing, editing, or agenting in one genre doesn't mean you can't acquire, write, edit, or agent in another genre. Your skills are transferable; it's unfair to be pigeonholed. So many editors, agents, etc. work across genres - you should be able to, too. #pubtip

Nonfiction writers, instead of asking other authors/experts to write a blurb for your book, ask them to promote your book to their followers in some way. Blurbs are a passive form of promotion that do very little to make readers aware of a new author. #pubtip

A rejection doesnāt necessarily mean the reviewing editor disliked the manuscript. A lot of factors come into deciding what to publish, including the publisherās current list and market trends. #pubtip
