My #pubtip tweet thread loyalists :royal wave: will recall that I look at clients and potential clients as a microbiome - a teeming multivariable entity of strengths and weaknesses. Qualifications, authority, voice, marketability, charisma - I’m thinking about them all.

#Pubtip Remember that while one trope or sub-genre might work for one publisher, it does not mean it will work for someone else. Each publisher has their own unique market and following!

This is subjective, but addressing the reader or having a character question themselves to the reader is a big no-no for me. It immediately pulls me out of your manuscript and reminds me that I'm not actively living in your book with the MC. It creates a disconnect! #querytip

When you've only read the old classics, it's really apparent. The beginning usually starts as if an elder was opening up a book and setting the stage for a story, and this is not what's selling today. Dive into the action and your character. Read recent publications! #querytip

Utilizing all of a character's senses is essential to world building. What do they see, smell, hear, touch? What would they pruposely notice by using these senses? When you only use one sense to describe worlds, it comes off flat and dull. This includes characters, too! #querytip

#querytip only pitch one book in your query! It doesn’t matter if you have a sequel or trilogy or ten books planned—I want to know what happens in THIS book, that THIS book is solid and engaging.

You’re pitching ONE book—don’t waste query space explaining the entire series.

#querytip The query email's subject line is important to me. I suggest:

Query: [TITLE IN CAPS]

Try to grab my attention, even if it's just in the title. Keep it simple, make it powerful.

Today's #pubtip: among first-time authors, I think *the* most common source of surprise and disappointment is the book tour or lack thereof. This is where I truly want to kill shows like The Affair and, well, any other popular media depiction of the book publishing experience.
