@annmrose Historical fiction, hooray or nay? That’s very vague.
If it’s a historical moment that has interest in being explored from a voice we may not have heard from historically then it’s absolutely a yay

@annmrose How do agents know what stories will sell? Are you all able to see the future? 🙃We all provide a yearly sacrifice….
No just kidding. We all try to watch the market and talk to editors and find out what they are looking for so it’s some logic with some guess work and luck mixed in ❤️

@annmrose Hi Ann, how important is an established social presence, website, having TikTok or Instagram, and connecting a brand with all of them before publishing?Depends on what you are writing. If you are writing non-fiction you need a platform but that doesn’t necessarily mean XX number of followers on the clock app
If it’s fiction - it doesn’t hurt but it also isn’t the end all be all

@annmrose Hypothetically speaking, suppose you query an agent at a "one and done" agency and that agent mysteriously disappears from the agency site & there's no mention of why or where they went. What's the writer's recourse there?Query someone else 🤷🏼♀️ — you can mention you sent it to so and so and never received a response and now that they seem to be gone you weren’t sure their protocol ❤️

@annmrose Hii Ann!!❤️ Do you think there’s room for younger YA in the current market?? I feel like my book is between YA and MGI do. But also it has to fit on one of those shelves so make sure it is sitting on one ❤️

@annmrose Thank you for this!If an agent has requested a full or partial, is it acceptable to follow-up with them after a while? If so, would you suggest 8 weeks? 12? 16?
Give at least three months before a follow up IMO. Things just are moving more slowly these days and their lack of response doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t interested ❤️

@annmrose Hi Ann, I love these elliptical askagent sessions. My question - How’s the Adult RomCom market doing? There are many established authors already. How hard for a debut to get in there?
It’s a very crowded market but there is still room for new authors ❤️

@annmrose How long are fulls averaging these days? And should I wait until everyone has passed (OR MAYBE NOT???) on the last book before starting to query the next one? (I write faster than the querying process, apparently)It takes a very long time. I would say don’t wait but also don’t forget to let the agents who have the “old” MS know if you get an offer on the “new” MS ❤️

@annmrose Can agents only sub to editors they have a relationship with or do they cold query like writers do? And can an author suggest an editor to an agent or is that a no no?Yes we can “cold query” but we’re also actively building connections
As for sub strategies that is up to the agent and author—I’m open to having conversations with my authors about who to sub to; some agents have a more hands off approach — ask on the call which it is for them

Jess L Freed @JessLFreed
@annmrose As I’m working on my 3rd manuscript now, I’m starting to wonder if it’ll be embarrassing to pop into agents inboxes every 6-12 months with a new project 😅Do agents recognize author names? Or care about that? Maybe it shows persistence? Lol
Some of us recognize names yes and sometimes we are very happy to see more projects from the same author
I wouldn’t worry about the optics and just keep doing your thing ❤️

Suzy Steele @SuzySteele12
@annmrose How many queries should someone send before they shelve a project?Whatever number they feel is the right one. There is no hard or fast rule here and with so many variables it would be disingenuous to give a hard number
Querying is hard so give yourself a lot of grace ❤️

Jess L Freed @JessLFreed
@annmrose If a manuscript looks like it might die on sub, what tends to be the next step for an agent / author? For me, my authors are already working on the next project as we go out on sub so if a MS is not finding its champion we just move to getting the next thing out on sub.
I can’t speak for other agents and how they approach this

Shannon Elaine is a recovering panster @shannonesweeney
@annmrose My burning question is as a YA romance writer how quickly do I need to introduce the love interest? Is chapter two too far?As long as chapter two doesn’t start on page 30 you should be okay. Every book is different so it’s hard to give a hard fast answer on things like this. Follow your gut on this one.

MJ Bowman, is querying YA Fantasy! @MJ_Bowman
@annmrose What does "I loved your full request, but I don't have a vision for how to market it." mean? Is that just a fancy way of saying "I didn't like it enough?"Part of an agents job is knowing how to position a book for sales so this likely means they don’t see a clear way to do that
They could very much love the story but just not know how to sell it

@annmrose Authors who submit materials in cooperation with AI. Hard pass?I haven’t seen this happen yet but I do unfortunately think it’s coming. I would like to support live, breathing authors opposed to AI. So yes, this would likely be a pass from me.

On the elliptical—does anyone want to talk about “similar titles” or “comp titles”?? Good, let’s see if we can

If querying is so competitive and agents are so overwhelmed with hundreds (thousands?) of queries each month, how can a writer help their query letter stand out in the slush pile? Here are a few tips! 🧵#RevPit #WritingCommunity #AmQuerying pic.twitter.com/9hRh9yKOyi

@annmrose Is 80k an acceptable word count for a YA romventure? Also, is romventure appropriate for queries or should it be better as romantic adventure? Thanks in advance!I love “romventure” but I’d probably keep it simple in the query and space it out romantic adventure and 80k sounds good for something like that ❤️

@annmrose Is “Commercial Women’s Fiction” even a thing? There is SO MUCH overlap with romance it feels like it doesn’t exist. Thoughts?Yes I would say it’s a “thing” ❤️
