@annmrose Thoughts on comping your book in a query/pitch to a not-yet-released book (that you've read) by a not-debut author with a decent sales record? Is it pointless? Or can it help to show market if you specify the similarities?As long as you’ve read it I think it’s fine. People will comp my clients’s books that I know don’t have ARCs yet and I’ll be like 🤨

@annmrose WC Q! Another thing that I’ve read several opinions on, but I set my target in the range of where suggestions overlapped. Would 75,000 be acceptable for a debut young adult fantasy, fairy tale retelling? 🌹I think that’s fine. I think it’s when you breach that 100k mark for a debut YA anything it can be tricky

@annmrose do you advise authors to have different pennames for different genres or is the industry/internet allowing for more leeway in this? do you ever help your authors pick pennames?I think it can depend on the circumstances and talking with your agent on strategy and what is the best idea for you and your career is the best way to handle this

@annmrose Yay, here’s a q, I’ve heard mixed things and REALLY want to nail this next time. In a query, should the MS be all caps, not italics, and in synopsis, should characters be all caps when first mentioned? Also, in query, metadata or blurb first? Thank you!You got it with the CAPS (comp titles are italics though 😉)
For meta data it’s a personal preference and I personally think it’s fine either way. As long as it’s in there I’m good

@gracemilusich Whats a solid outline for a synopsis? Should I include a brief paragraph about the main characters or not? Different internets say different things🥶There is no hard and fast rule here, but I personally love it when a synopsis tells me a bit about the focal character(s) and walks me through the plot of the piece.

@gracemilusich Is memoir fiction or nonfiction?? I know it’s nf but when it’s literary it feels so much more suited for agents looking for voice, adult, contemporary, topical, etc, you know? And NF is excluded so often, memoir feels like it’s own islandI understand where you're coming from! Even if the memoir has a literary feel, it would still fit into the NF category (in my opinion).

@gracemilusich This is so kind of you! I’ve been wondering about genre. When a book falls into more than one genre, how should you decide to label it? I recently read some query advice about not labeling too specifically, but with QT you have to.Yes, I absolutely understand where you're coming from. My advice would be to select the genre that you feel best describes the overall project and label your submission as such on QT. Then, in the actual query, you'd have room to elaborate on that if you wish.

@gracemilusich Is 160k word count really terrifying to an agent now? Even for SFFI generally recommend trying to keep your word count within genre standards. This changes, but adult SFF tends to be roughly 100,000-120,000 words.

@gracemilusich How do you read your subs? Do you do it through computer, cozy up with a kindle and a blanket, etc? (I have heard agents do it so many different ways!lI like to sit at my computer and go through them in the afternoon. Most importantly, I always start by making sure my cat is well-situated on my lap😂
