@annmrose oh, this is an opportunity.Um... where do I even start I'm so new to this still.
How do you/agents feel about books that kind of... cusp the edge of sexual content. My world treats nudity/sexuality as not taboo (sex is still private) so there are scenes with nudity. 1/2
I think it depends on the age group and genre you are writing in, and what readers expectations are for that age group/genre

@annmrose I've heard that it's easier for an author of "serious" genre fic (like SFFH) to later branch out into comedy rather than vice versa. Any truth to these rumours?I have not heard this rumor. If you write something well it doesnāt matter the genre

@annmrose What are you most excited about, work-wise, right now? What is really challenging you lately?Waiting on contracts is always exciting!!
As for challenging, I think the pace in which everything is happening. No one is to blame, it just takes a lot of extra patients these days ā¤ļø

@annmrose How do you feel about requeeries if the author has revised?Iām fine with them personally I just like for it to be mentioned in the query (that it is a requery and possibly a brief mention of the changesāāI did a complete rewriteā for example)

@annmrose If your book is looking like it's too "out there" for an agent to represent it, are there independent publishers you recommend trying to work with? Thank you!I would just suggest you do your research. Ask to talk to other authors published by them and have a professional review the contract with you.
Best of luck.

@annmrose Do you read for fun? Not research, not work, not to keep up on the latest, but pure fun.Not as much as I want to, but yes. I just bought three new books this weekend!

@annmrose if querying a novel with very large chapters (10k+) and the queried agent requests "first three chapters" or something similar, is it best to just go with the first 3-5K words rather than putting something that large into a query? thanks for your time!I mean you can follow guidelines, they wonāt fault you for that. ā on a side note though really long chapters can make the pacing feel off so make sure they NEED to be that long.

@annmrose Let's say you have a YA MS that includes a romance but also includes a lot of other contemporary issues. When pitching, would you pitch it as a Romance or as a Contemporary? That depends; is the central focus of the story a romance or is it the contemporary issues. What is the core of the plotāthe glue that holds it all together? Also, is there an HEA?

@annmrose If an agent has a vision for a MG novel to be a graphic MG novel, would they find the illustrator? And I guess another question, what makes a *good* graphic novel in terms of writing? Not necessarily, but they may have one in mind. If an agent brings the idea up to you speak to them about it and how they envision the process going.
I donāt think the second question can be answered in a simple tweet. But do remember the art does a big portion of the job

@annmrose What is the proper way to nudge an agent for a query response?I would first check their website about how and if they respond and what their standard timeframe is, then if you feel a nudge is warranted, a āI just wanted to check in and see if you had any thoughts about TITLE.ā Keep it simple and short.

@annmrose Are agents generally hesitant to sign someone outside of the USA/UK? I can imagine that it's a bit of a logistical nightmare.No. I donāt think we are. Iāve personally offered to those out of the US before

Somebody on the #AskAgent Tumblr asked if it was true that some editors PURPOSELY ignore agents to "push back" against nudges on submissions. I mean - I don't think so? Am I naive? We're all trying our best here, friends.

@annmrose Why do agents ghost on fulls? And is there anything the author can do to prompt a response/closure?Some agents do unfortunately.
I personally respond to ALL full requests. And authors can feel free to nudge.
The best you can do if they arenāt responsive is to try a few times and if there is still nothing just close no response. š

@FractalOfLoops It depends. We look to authors for that information because you are telling us where you see your book placed. @annmrose Will agents work with authors who have a good book/query but have made mistakes or dubious choices about marketing category (ex. upper YA vs adult or urban fantasy vs paranormal romance), or is that a definite rejection? It depends. @annmrose If an agent with a full manuscript said to check back in a few weeks if you don't hear back, how many weeks is "a few"? And if you nudged and didn't hear anything, how long should you wait before nudging again?I usually say three months before a nudge so if they said a few weeks that seems oldly unspeficially specific

@annmrose When agents ask for the full do they typically read the whole thing before making a choice noting what they would want to change giving the whole thing a chance or will they just stop part of the way through and reject? Iāve always wondered how much of a chance they give each MS.No not always. Plenty of times the āmurky middleā gets really murky so an agent will stop and reject at that point. If you are getting full rejections this is likely the reason. The middle needs some more work.
