Hannah Grieve @Hannah_Grieve

@MandyHubbard @MelanieFishbane @TherezaDSWrites Is it ok to follow up (after an appropriate amount of time) I’m always nervous that it’ll be deemed unprofessional

Writers can ABSOLUTELY follow up after an appropriate amount of time (generally, 8-12 weeks is common), because you ARE a professional who is working on your career. #AskECLA

Yep! The market for graphic novels is continuing to grow which is SUPER exciting! It felt more "niche" when I got into publishing ten years ago... but more and more big 5 pubs are looking at them. #AskECLA

#AskECLA What does YA crossover mean? Audience? Genres? Both?
Replying to @ameliaHworth

(But also to more directly answer the meaning- usually it's audience. Melding genres is usually just called "Genre-blending" not crossover. ) #AskECLA

@MandyHubbard @GarrettAlwert @LindaEpstein Hi Mandy are you looking for a graphic novel? Thanks
Replying to @ShireenWrites

I'm JUST starting to dip my toes in the Graphic Novel pool so won't be open to them for submissions in the near future, but I hope to expand at some point! #AskECLA

Hey, all! Any thoughts on the current market for (virus free) YA sci-fi/dystopian? Should I wait to query? #AskECLA
Replying to @mwatchornbooks

Could be challenging (the dystopian part). We saw the YA paranormal boom 2007-2010, followed by Dystopian, and Paranormal is just inching back now. If it's fresh/different though, it could definitely work. #AskECLA

Melanie is revising (again!) Fishbane @MelanieFishbane

@MandyHubbard @TherezaDSWrites I have a question about waiting, following up and resubmitting. How long is too long? There are some I've never ever heard back from. Or asked for full and then nothing. I'm assuming I should just move on. :) #askECLA
Replying to @MelanieFishbane

I always respond on EVERY sub, but I can be dreadfully slow on fulls. Definitely a follow up or two, and then you can mentally move on, but may still see responses from stragglers. A lot of writers get passes after they have an agent! #AskECLA

#AskECLA What does YA crossover mean? Audience? Genres? Both?
Replying to @ameliaHworth

The key on "crossover" is to do the "main" thing WELL, and then naturally crossover to other audiences. Ex: "YA crossover" should be an amazing YA novel that appeals to YA audiences, and then it expands to adults naturally. Don't start out trying to be both things. #AskECLA

What’s the number one thing that attracts you to a manuscript? Voice? Story? A feeling? #askECLA
Replying to @Hannah_Grieve

I think voice is maybe the simplest way to boil it down. It's that intangible thing that just clicks and draws you into a world or a character's head. I love when I'm ALL IN within the first few sentences! #AskECLA

Hello! Thank you for this!
I have a YA Shakespeare retelling, contemp with magical elements. My first lines are straight out of Romeo & Juliet. Will agents know this is not a permissions issue if my play source is over 100 years old?

Any good agent should understand basic copyright laws. (If they don't, not an agent you want to work with. Copyright is something we advise our clients on-- like whether to use their legal name or pen name, negotiating that the pub is required to register, etc). #askECLA

Reem Khaleel @reemkhaleel97

#askPSLA What is your favorite part of agenting or working with your clients on submission?
Replying to @reemkhaleel97

This is hard because there are so many things to love! Here's a brief list:
- reading the ms for the first time (🥰)
- writing a pitch letter
- creating submission list
- sharing good news with a client
- sharing good news with an editor

Only hard part is rejection... #askPSLA

Can you demystify the agent-editor relationship a bit? When you are deciding whether to offer, are you already thinking about which editors to sub to? Or do you research each project individually to find potential matches? How often do u sell projects to the same ed? #askPSLA
Replying to @cathydipierro

When I'm reading a manuscript that I'm interested in representing, I am constantly thinking of who to submit to and how I will pitch the book. Sometimes I have an entire submission list in my head before I've even had a chance to connect with the author! #askPSLA

I almost always have a few people in mind when I offer to sign someone. That’s an agent’s job, knowing folks!

Though research still plays a big role. New people get hired all the time. We’re always getting to know new editors.

I have five books with @MargotM7 so often! #askPSLA

Lynn McPherson @CozyMysteryLynn

How long do agents usually take to decide if they are interested once they’ve requested a full manuscript? #askPSLA
Replying to @CozyMysteryLynn

Once I've requested more, I try to be quick about it. However, it also depends on what is on my plate already from my existing clients. A client's work will always take priority, but I do prioritize full manuscripts from queries as much as I'm able to. #askPSLA

Steffi is a PitchWars Hopeful @clumsiesteffi

Should writers send a nudge after not hearing back? My research has come up with “Yes! Do the thing!” and “No! If you don’t hear back it’s a no! Don’t be unprofessional!” So it’s a bit of a range there...

#askPSLA
Replying to @clumsiesteffi

Take a look at the agency website for guidelines. Some agencies will say not to nudge or that no response means it's a pass after a certain amount of time. If you do decide to nudge, it helps if you have a reason (i.e. other interest, a new development, etc.) #askPSLA
