Is it okay to requery agents if Iβve changed the MCβs age, significantly changed the word count (for the better), and decently changed the first chapter and query letter?#askagent
Each agent will have a different answer to this. I prefer a revision with an eye toward the full manuscript before resub. Always tell me in the query if it is a resub after revision so I don't accidentally reject it as a duplicate. #askagent

#askagent @bookendslit I've noticed a lot of first person present tense in thrillers and crime recently. Do you have any preference on POV or tense? Does it depend on genre or just how well it is written? It depends on genre norms and writing style, but I tend to respond better to third-person POV. Thatβs not to say I donβt like first-person at all, just that itβs trickier for me personally. #askagent

@NaomisLitPix @bookendslit #askagent If you submit a MS that is turned down, then overhaul said MS so it reads totally differently, is it okay to resubmit? Or is the first version a good indication that the agent isn't looking for your style/genre etc? Thank you! Each agent will have a different response to this. For me, I don't mind seeing again, but it needs to be a significant overhaul and plz mention it's a resub after revision. Some authors just requery us over and over w/same and I'd hate to wrongly assume that. #askagent

#askagent @bookendslit I've noticed a lot of first person present tense in thrillers and crime recently. Do you have any preference on POV or tense? Does it depend on genre or just how well it is written?I think many readers like that sense of immediacy that 1st person present gives you, which works especially well in something like a thriller. Personally, it's my least favorite and not something I tend to gravitate to. But that's the super subjective business we're in! #askagent

If I wrote the pb I'm querying as part of a series, should I mention that? Or is it better to have multiple different pb manuscripts completed before querying in case an agent asks for other work samples? #askagentIt's good to mention it AND it is good to have a few different ones completed. We often want to see several PBs not only to see your consistency, but to gauge if there is a stronger book to lead with into submission. #askagent

If I wrote the pb I'm querying as part of a series, should I mention that? Or is it better to have multiple different pb manuscripts completed before querying in case an agent asks for other work samples? #askagentDefinitely other picture book manuscripts completed. If the one isn't grabbing them, then two more in the same series is unlikely to either. #askagent #kidlit #picturebooks

@EidsonMillicent @NaomisLitPix So all that is to say, that yes - it is possible now to indie publish in a way that wasn't possible before. But from a business standpoint, you're going to have to invest a LOT in order to do it well and have your book stand out from the noise. And for most authors... #askagent:cough: For most authors, myself included, it's not something that I can be done to the success level you might want without a team of people with different expertise behind you. And that's what traditional publishing and representation gives you. (/thread!) #askagent

#askagent is it appropriate to re-query agents with an old shelved MS which you completely changed? Iβm talking about major world-building/character/plot changes, even changing age category, only leaving in a very basic original premise.I'm always open to seeing something again if, like you said, significant changes have been made. Other agents may feel differently of course, but I think many of us are open to seeing substantive revisions. #askagent

@NaomisLitPix @AgentJessicaA @bookendslit Another question: if a junior agent is hoping to offer rep but has to talk to a sr agent first, would you want to know if you had req a full? Or would u rather wait til there's a solid offer? #askagentFor me, solid offer, please. Other agents may feel differently. #askagent

@NaomisLitPix @bookendslit I know this varies by agency but how does it work if a writer decides to write outside their category. So say I did MG/YA and then decide to do adult romance? Does it get help from another agent or does the writer have to query again? #askagentA great question to ask when you get an offer! "Do you rep other genres? Are there agents at your agency that could handle X genre if you don't?" This does vary widely from agency to agency and agent to agent. #askagent

@NaomisLitPix @ShayFan I recently queried someone and opened with a common twitter thread we were on but now I realize she probably wont read my query for like a month and may not even remember the thread- so now I feel like it just sounds weird and not the "bonding moment" I was hoping to illicit. When authors tell me they have communicated with me on Twitter, I'm just grateful they follow me. It shows me they might really know what they are saying when they say "I see you're interested in X..." So for me, that's a plus, whether I remember it or not. #askagent

@EidsonMillicent afford the cost of an editor, copyeditor, cover designer, book designer, etc. Because the quality level of indie books has risen significantly since the start of self publishing ebooks, and it's a big investment to do well. #askagent But also...I really enjoy traditional publishing. I love having a team that's working to make my book better, I love seeing the finished product that is 1,000 times better than if I'd hired all these team members separately.... #askagent

@NaomisLitPix @AgentJessicaA @bookendslit It's nice to know you recognize the name. πQuery Manager also shows us if you've queried us before. So I can easily say, huh, that name is familiar. @NaomisLitPix @bookendslit My question: do you prefer a stand alone novel from a new author or would you like a series, knowing youβll have several titles to work with an author to grow with? (Say for SFF) #askagentEither is fine for me, and pubs often have a different vision than I do (they want a duology where I see a trilogy, or a trilogy where I see standalone). Good to tell me in the Q how you envision it, and if I offer, let's have a convo about that potential direction. #askagent

If I'm getting a lot of "this isn't quite right for my list" rejections, does that mean my query is fine and I just haven't found the right person, or is that a nice way to say it actually needs work? #askagentIt could also be that there is something about the premise that doesn't feel like it would work in the market. I pass on good books all the time because there just isn't a strong enough market for that particular book at the moment. #askagent

@EidsonMillicent So I have both indie published and traditionally published, and I am choosing to continue with traditional publication for a few reasons - 1.) it seems that the indie bubble burst in terms of easy eyes using Am*zon's algorithm 2.) the algorithm favors speed (pub'ing new stuff ...every thirty days, which I could not do consistently and with a level of quality I felt comfortable putting my name on 3.) certain genres just never really took off in self pub'ed ebooks, inc childrens and middle grade 4.) I could not hand sell *and* write *and* ...#askagent

Or "my list is full in this area." Or "This is too similar to something on my list." Or "I liked this but I need to LOVE it." Or "I don't have a clear vision of how to resolve the issues I see&naming them could do more harm than good." #askagent

@NaomisLitPix @vanessaepeay @bookendslit What happens if you have two manuscripts out and you get an offer on one (that's not ideal, but sometimes there's a bit of overlap before shelving an ms...) #askagentFirst, know how your offering agent(s) feels about whether you should have them as your sole rep or whether you should have diff rep for diff genres. You can alert agents of other projects that you have an offer on one, espec if that agent reps both genres. #askagent

#askagent So I have 71 rejections w/ no feedback. I had a bad #revpit experience where I was told that because I published a childrens book that no one would take me seriously as a #HistFic author cuz my career path is too vague. Should I be leaving the PB off my query?Wow! I'm surprised someone told you that. No, leave it on. Publishing experience is good for us to know about whether relevant to the current project or not. #askagent
