Jason Franz @TheBadgrProject

Happy quarantine #AskAgent I was wondering what the general consensus was for query letters...do you like it when we jump right in to the story and pitch and leave personalization for later in the query, or do you like us to lead with why we chose to sub to you?
Replying to @TheBadgrProject

I like a bit of personalization, but what matters is the blurb. The meat of the story. I need to know what the story is about way more than I need to know why you chose me... I'll know right away if it's right for me. But it's def nice to get a polite, personal greeting.#askagent

I know every scenario is different, but are there any commonalities in agent/author relationships...i.e. things communicated about regularly besides deadlines? #askagent
Replying to @jaelrbakari

i do alot of author care: talking about new projects, how we feel about editorial responses, if they need me to step in for them, also being second eyes on their work. Really we are kind of like gardeners meets best friends, always there to lend a hand and prune things. #askagent

@bookendslit #askagent What's a topic in #PB that you haven't seen in the past few years that you would love to see as a literary agent?
Replying to @emjbonar

I am such a sucker for daddy/daughter books. And I love HAIR LOVE. So to me it is breaking down those expectations of what dad roles and mom roles are. #askagent

Replying to @aobooks__

The best way is to query agents when you have complete and polished manuscript! Each agent has submission guidelines on their website. Be sure to follow guidelines for each agent you query. The Bookends YouTube channel has some great videos with advice on how to query. #askagent

Do you like it if a writer tells you of other projects they have in the works too? #AskAgent

I do like to know if a querying author has the intention to write other books in the same or a different genre, but it's also a conversation we can have when I offer representation, too. #askagent

Absolutely! It helps to know if I'm the right agent for you. For example, if I'm offering on an adult book but you really want to write middle grade and that's where you see your career going, I'm probably not the right agent for you. #askagent

nicole bea @nicolebeawrites

One other thing that just popped into my head - does an author having parted from previous representation affect any decision making? #AskAgent
Replying to @nicolebeawrites

I’m going to disagree slightly with my colleagues. Generally speaking, no, it doesn’t matter. But if you’ve been through three agents in three years, I might be concerned as to why these relationships aren’t working out. But that would be a discussion to have. #askagent

What are some of the biggest hiccups encountered with agented authors? What advice do you give them to keep them pushing through the next book(s) at a sustainable rate? #askagent
Replying to @jaelrbakari

I think the most important thing is to make sure that you continue to communicate with your agent when you need help, even once you're well on your way to publication or already published. We're here to help after the book deal is signed, too. #askagent

Joanne Machin is querying! @heyjomachin

@bookendslit I’m curious how often agents at an agency work together vs independently & how important an agency’s support is relative to the writer’s relationship w/an agent (I hope that made sense...) #askagent
Replying to @heyjomachin

This depends on the agency, but BookEnds is super collaborative and connects daily. I stress to authors on the call that I've got an immensely talented & intelligent team behind me. That support certainly means a lot, even if they don't know it's happening. #AskAgent
