Prologue or no? I know some agents hate them, but what if it helps the story long? #askgzlaI don't hate prologues. I do find many of them unnecessary, though. Yours might need that prologue, but when deciding, ask yourself if without it, the story is affected? #AskGZLA

Prologue or no? I know some agents hate them, but what if it helps the story long? #askgzlaAh - that all depends - most of the time they end up in the cutting room floor. Really think hard about whether or not you need that prologue (or is it just how you always hear it so it's hard to give up?). #AskGZLA

#AskGZLA What does it mean when an agent says “I did not connect with the voice “. Does this mean they just didn’t like it and there’s not much the author can do to change in the writing?not necessarily. voice can be subjective and sometimes more about THE WAY you are telling the story and whether they are into that. and sometimes it's just a gut thing. or something altogether. i think it means different things to different agents. #askGZLA

Any advice for author/illustrators who want to do MG graphic novels? #ASKGZLAAs long as you've read well in that category (and either know what you're doing or are willing to learn!), then go for it! #AskGZLA

Just wondering how you would handle a prospective client who had both a completed YA manuscript and picture book dummies, assuming both were high quality and marketable, of course. Thanks! #AskGZLA #askagentI recommend querying your strongest piece! You can then mention at the end that you also write the other category, so if the time comes for "the call," you can discuss your career goals. It's always a good idea, though, to see how you might want to launch yourself. #AskGZLA

Hi #AskGZLA can i ask if one of you receives a submission and you see potential but it’s not to your taste, will you pass it on to another agent you think might like it? Thanks #askagentif it's another agent at GZLA yes! we wouldn't want to miss out. however, i don't typically share with agents outside my agency #askGZLA

What sort of word limit do you think a YA fantasy should be? #AskGZLAi think most people will say no more than 100k, but i think you can get between 80-130k. it's good to have a range to aim for, but the most important thing is how much you need in order to tell your story well and effectively. #askGZLA

"People want comfort and nostalgia at the moment." @K8JohnsonAuthor and @janelovering talking about the British response to difficult times and why romance is so popular. There will be a happy ending even if the book is gritty and dark. #SoAWritingRomanceI am absolutely looking for happy endings at the moment - all genres. I think currently readers do not want to invest 2-3 hours reading a novel to be depressed at end #askagent #SoAWritingRomance

.@BookstrOfficial: Literary agents are the glue that hold the publishing world together...how crucial is the role of an agent to the career of a writer? We caught up with Trident Media Group’s Mark Gottlieb who answered all this and more! bookstr.com/article/there-… #askagent

In all seriousness, publishers might prefer 50k (bc it's short) or 90k (bc it's more meaty) or whatever else (bc trend), but a good writer can get away with ANY word count if all the other elements are there. #WritingCommunity #askagentAnd keep in mind that nonfiction is usually sold on proposal. I've seen great proposals run between 20k--30k words. #WritingCommunity #askagent

For me, the ideal word count is: good writing. 😊For nonfiction, having a platform is also, sadly (imo), really important. Almost essential.

We talk a lot about what querying writers should be doing better/differently/more often, but here's something people are actually doing RIGHT almost 100% of the time: using my correctly spelled name!Lucky. People misspell my name in about 30--40% of the queries I get. 🤷🏻♀️ Cecelia❌ Cecily❌ Cecile❌ Lira❌ Lyrics❌ sometimes it's an entirely NEW names: Cindy❌ Cynthia❌

You know what, though? I don't mind. Give me good writing and I'm happy! 😊

@UweStenderPhD I know queries are typically serious, but what do you think of serious but humorous queries? It, like everything, depends on the execution.

@UweStenderPhD Hello! For a new writer, do you think I should query more often to new agents or the more established ones at an agency, assuming they both are interested in my genre?Honestly, I don't think it makes a difference. I know that at @triadaus, we are all equally greedy for great talent.

@UweStenderPhD Hello! What motivates agents to send a rejection that’s more personal? Is “this has potential” but it’s not for me simply a kind form letter—as I suspect it is? Thanks.Great question. Not necessarily. If wrote you "this has potential," then I'd mean it, but who knows about others.

@UweStenderPhD I don’t know if you can answer this, but it’s important I ask all potential agents so I know if we would work well together... can you list the 20+ candidates in the Democratic primary and then rank them?Yes, NOW I can. 👍❤

@UweStenderPhD @Maria_Tureaud How hopeless would you say it might be to interest an agent in a collection of interwoven short stories? It depends on the agent. But, NEVER be hopeless. One day, I will publically share my road into and then out of hopelessness, and the bottom line, cliche for others, FACT for me: NEVER give up, and never bow down to "gatekeepers."

@UweStenderPhD This is more of a market/perspective question, but I saw an agent post that dragon books might be coming back. Do you agree? If not, what trends are you seeing in the YA market on the acquisitions end?Dragons never went away. And NEVER write for trends. In a totally self serving link, let me point you to SILVER BATAL AND THE WATER DRAGON RACES, repped by @btaylorbooks, written by @KristinHalbrook to be released on MY birthday. #Teamtriada 😎 amazon.com/Silver-Batal-W…

@UweStenderPhD When taking an agent up on offer to R&R, should one go ahead and attach full ms when resending query or should one wait for response first?
