@bookendslit @BookEndsJessica Is it appropriate to mention future projects in a query to help give agents a feel for where we plan to go? Even if those projects aren't fully realized yet? I love this and thanks! If the book you're pitching is part of a series you can mention that you envision a series, but I would suggest keeping the focus of the pitch on the book you are pitching. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica That is surprising! Can I just clarify - is that requested extra pages/full MS from a query sent to you, or a requested query/pages from a pitch?
Typically non-responders are more commonly from nonfiction queries than from fiction queries. In this case, there's a mix of both. The requests are for proposals for NF and fulls for F & based on the query. #askagent

@TLMumley The advice still holds. 😊 Scene is the framework that allows writers to include setting, description, characters, dialogue, and stream of thought --- all while grounding and these elements in something the reader can clearly visualize. #WritingCommunity #askagent #amwritingAre there brilliant novels that don't follow this advice? Of course! Exceptions always exist, and authors are allowed to do anything they want as long as it's intentional. But a good writer should be able to create a good scene, even if she chooses not to use it. #askagent 🍀

@ceciliaclyra Thank you, Cecilia! This is good advice. @katenashagent @DebsCarr Do self-published authors need agents? And do agents want to take on self-published authors? #literaryagents #askagentAn agent is there as a career manager so it is down to what author wants from their writing career as to whether they need or want an agent #askagent #selfpubconf

Anyone at #selfpubconf, do ask me any questions you have about #literaryagents. I’m here all day. Or you can ask me here on Twitter! #askagent pic.twitter.com/oYw5xJEtLwAsked by a writer at #selfpubconf how to define genre of their novel. Whatever is the main plot defines main genre so a mystery with a sub plot romance is a mystery first. Or vice versa. #askagent

@katenashagent OK, well being from the world of educational publishing, I've always wondered how the fiction world works. What are the benefits of a literary agent?Agents are career managers for authors so securing them contracts for their books, negotiating these contracts and protecting & promoting their interests. Think manager in music biz 🎶 but in publishing. #askagent #selfpubconf

@UweStenderPhD @kaitylynne13 I have a YA with religious themes but it is decidedly not a Christian book. How do I convey this in a query? The same way you just did in your question.

@UweStenderPhD What are some characteristics you notice are typical of a writer who has a long term career mindset?#askagent
I hope all writers write out of passion, and because they are compelled to write. Those are career writers.

@UweStenderPhD #askagent What do you look for on page 1 that makes you keep reading? Do you prefer when Adult stories start with action/the hook straight off, or give a feel for the MC & a sense of their “normal” before their world gets turned upside down?Great questions, tough to answer. I guess, I am looking for a "connection" to my subjective preferences. I often compare it to music. I hear 10 seconds of a song and decide if I listen to the whole song or move on. The same with books.

One sample strategy: send out submission together to give editors same shot. Follow up when there is new info or interest. #LMVOfficeHours #askagentThe most important thing is that the agent is transparent with the client and explains their submission strategy. #LMVOfficeHours #askagent
