@bookendslit will you consider books/authors that are/self-publish?We accept queries for self-published works! We do prefer non-self-published works

@bookendslit @kaitylynne13 #askagent If you got a request to submit from an agent at a conference last Sept. You sent the material right away but didn't get a response. Sent a check in email a couple of weeks ago, what is the protocol now? Thanks.Depending on what their protocol is on the website (response guidelines/no answer means no query). You can continue to wait and nudge them periodically if you really want them to consider, or you can withdraw your query.

@bookendslit Re-query after a significant revision and time period? Would love your thoughts. #askagentIf it's significant and addresses the agents reasons for rejecting, once you have it ready, it's worth a try!

@bookendslit #AskAgent How often do you update your MSWL and other sites such as Agent Query and Query Tracker? Not as Often as we'd like. Once our wishlists go out there, they tend to go to a bunch of places, and it can be hard to keep track. Twitter, and our website is best for up-to-date information. (though QT updates with our preferences on QM so that should be up to date)

@bookendslit #AskAgent Can one query TOO many agents? (Not at once, of course.) Despite being on four MS subs and being told my writing is great/strong/lovely, it hasn't found the right agent. I realize it's subjective on all sides, but how many MS rejects would you endure before moving on?I think this is entirely up to how many agents you think would be a good fit for your manuscript. Once you have no other agents you'd like to work with, I'd say it's time to move on.

@bookendslit @kaitylynne13 Hi! Is there an article or a reference that you recommend to formatting novels for full/partial requests? Also, how important is an individually personalized query, if at all?Aha, we do! (Link attached).
And to your second question, I would at the very least personalize with the agent's name.

@bookendslit Thanks for doing this #AskAgent! If a picture book is dependent on the scene and has <200 words, is there a best way to format the MS (e.g., necessary art notes bracketed, text in line vs. new line break per new scene, potential page numbers indicated etc.)?
Interesting question. Everyone tends to do this a bit differently. You can certainly work it as each line being a new scene, or as each line break being a new spread w/ page numbers included. I would bracket the art notes for ease of reading.

@bookendslit #AskAgent and... is a “follow-for-follow” type of Twitter interaction a necessity in attracting agents who focus on platforms? It seems rather odd to have a large “following “ when no one is really paying attention. At least, that’s how it seems...We always say focus on a strong following, not a large following. But I'm not sure that would help in attracting agents (unless you're working on an NF project, and selling platform)

@bookendslit How can I know if I am writing women’s fiction or literary fiction about women?#AskAgent
There's not a ton of a different. But it comes down to the voice and tone, whether it's more commercial or literary.

@bookendslit If you're represented by a YA fantasy agent but also want to write in Adult Psychological thrillers, would you need to find a new agent to represent you? If your current agent doesn't represent both genre's you're wanting to write in? #AskAgentThat's a conversation to have with your agent. It's not uncommon to seek another agent in that genre, but it is usually a mutual decision.

@McQuarterWriter There is a happy medium. I think your opening chapters and actual *letter* part of the query are strictly professional, but whether you like it or not, your voice is going to come through a bit in your blurb. I also think reading blurbs from other authors/published books are 1/2helpful, as you see what publishers are using to sell books, and how hundreds of pages of plot are boiled down into a few paragraphs. Same as reading widely in the genre you write. (2/2)

@bookendslit #AskAgent In your last video you encourage voice in queries, yet so many agent’s forums insist on strict professionalism, insisting they can spot what they’re looking for. Is there a happy medium? Also, are blurbs from bonafide published authors helpful? There is a happy medium. @bookendslit Are agents ever bothered when writers nudge them on query responses if their website doesn't state a 'no response means no' policy? #askagentThey shouldn't be. I think if they posted guidelines on dates, it's appropriate to nudge once you cross that.

@msmariavicente Hi Maria! What do you like to see in a chapter book submission package? Pitches for other potential books in the series, or a more fleshed out outline? Thanks!Just the query is fine at first, but then I’d probably ask to see the full manuscript, a full synopsis for that first book, and then a brief overview of series potential.

Dogs of Doom @SarahWynne25
@msmariavicente Do you expect to see comparables in query letters or is a pitch sufficient? If it helps, this question is related to a chapter book (series) query. Thanks!I’m indifferent when it comes to comp titles. If you have them, great! If not, oh well. The pitch should stand out on its own either way.

@msmariavicente Thanks so much! It seems like there is more and more expected of the author (from what I’ve gleaned) these days which muddies my answer to those questions! This is true! The question then becomes, what can this publisher do for me that I can’t? (And the answer will vary drastically by publisher.)

@msmariavicente When you consider new writers, are you considering their initial work/project proposal more, or considering the promise of long-term publishing partnership and overall body of work that would grow from it?A little of both. I obviously need to love the current project that I’ll be pitching first, but I also want to connect with the writer and be sure I can advocate for their work long-term.
