@UweStenderPhD Is a draft of one complete chapter enough to query for nonfiction books? And if an agent/pub is interested can time to completion be negotiated? For nonfiction, you need a detailed proposal, and about 30-50 sample pages, whether that is one chapter or several does not matter. And yes.

@UweStenderPhD #askagent Another comp titles question. After quite a search I found a comp title that fit my ms. I started including it in my queries. That book recieved so much positive attention that I felt weird using it. Should I keep using it or find something less sensational? If it is the perfect match, keep using it. If it isn't, then you should not have used it in the first place, in my opinion.

@UweStenderPhD #askagent Do you pay more attention to the query letter or the sample pages? If the query letter is so-so , do you look at the pages? or is it a pass. Happy New Year by the way.Thank you, the same to you. Since I only want to see the query in a query, I pay zero attention to any samples. I cannot speak for others.

@UweStenderPhD What do you do to keep yourself moving forward with a book when it's gotten multiple rejections, and how do you help your authors not get stuck in the Swamps of Despair? #askagent pic.twitter.com/SzwnWR6s14I tell them to write another book, and let me worry about selling the first one.

@UweStenderPhD In your opinion, do comp titles make or break a query? How important are they? #askagentFor me, they do neither. I am more interested in the actual concept of your book first and foremost. That may be different for other agents.

@UweStenderPhD #askagent I can't remember - am I supposed to sent my MG SF to you first or someone else at Triada who might be a better fit? I feel like you've answered this for someone else during an #askagent before... pic.twitter.com/IY4YnPYO2fGo for the best fit.

@UweStenderPhD i have a suspense novel with two possible openings: one begins with the prologue as dramatic closing scenes (workplace shooting) then chap 1 starts story 6 months previously- option 2 starts in order and moves shooting scene to chronological time. thoughts?Since a lot of publishers seem to not like a prologue, I would go with option 2 (based on that assumption). However, if option 1 makes for a better book, then go for it.

@UweStenderPhD I actually have a couple of Qs I've been thinking a lot about.1) I know that agents look for "polished" manuscripts, but what exactly does that term refer to?2) If my book is a series that ages the MC from 18-20, does that still make it YA if everything else complies to YA norms?1. It means getting the manuscript in the best shape possible.
2. 20 seems old for YA, but I cannot give an answer without having seen the manuscript. However, since I worry about the age, this would not be for me. Other agents may disagree.

@UweStenderPhD Do you see good alternatives emerging to the so-called Big Five or Six publishing houses—from an agent's perspective—or is that pretty much the whole game?Yes, at this time there are still plenty of additional great publishers alive and well in the marketplace.

@UweStenderPhD Should queries for memoirs be written in first person? I think they should, but I have been told different things by different agents, which surprises me because I assume there would be a standard rule for this.Yes, in my opinion, they should.

@UweStenderPhD I'll ask this of you since I have nothing to lose. I've sent you my fiction novel a few times now, who at Triada might be more interested in it?Also, I'ver got a series of Shorter fiction stories (Not novel sized) And you mildly interested in those?
I don't know, you have to research what our agents want, and if you think one of them is a match, then query that agent. No, I am not interested in shorter fiction.

@debralynnlazar @BookEndsJessica I have the same question. Is it bad to have political posts? I try to keep mine to writing and weird life moments but politics seeps in.It's funny. Years ago I did recommend keeping away from political posts. But the world has changed. I don't think it's a problem like it used to be, but I do think you need to balance with other things. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Hi Jessica,As I continue revising my novel, I would like to ask you, what computer program do you suggest for writing/formating a novel? What is the standard computer program recommended?
Your reply will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you(!)

This might be a better question for #writingcommunity. I would say Microsoft Word since that's what agents and editors use when editing, but that doesn't mean it's the best program for actually writing. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica If you receive a query and it isn't for you, do you share with others in your firm? Im wondering if it makes sense to query other agents at BookEnds if 2 of you already rejected it.Not typically. Unless you know for certain another agent has seen the query feel free to query others at @bookendslit. #askagent

Agent Naomi @NaomisLitPix: How do agents typically feel about signing on an author who has previously presented a version of the book they are querying on Wattpad? Considering it but don't want to jeopardize my chances of getting an agent and traditional publisher. #askagentEven Wattpad would be considered published. I don’t think it jeopardizes a future relationship with an agent, but I think most would prefer a new work. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica @musingsbook @bookendslit I've been working on a guided journal, but I'm unclear on formatting it for submission. Any specifications?#amwriting
I think I would leave some space to show where the person should journal. You could probably give 5 or so prompt examples and then a list of other questions in list form. #askagent
