👋Hey #amquerying authors! If you receive an offer of rep (🎉🙌✨) I’d recommend replying on the same thread to check in with the other agents who have your mss (then they can easily read the sample and see correspondence) and ADDING “OFFER RECEIVED” to the existing subject line. Some words of wisdom from my brilliant associate @AllieLevick—we always appreciate a heads up! #amquerying #askagent #MSWL

@BookEndsJessica Submissions question: When sending a manuscript to an agent or publisher, is it proper to include any quotes at the beginning of the book? I have two quotes that are very pertinent to the material and I don't want to get anything wrong when submitting.Do you mean quotes about the book from others or quotes that you pulled from other works? I would not put in review quotes about the book, but quotes from other works are fine. #askagent

@UweStenderPhD #askagent Any particular recommendation on what time of the year to query? For example, certain months are busy for them due to publishing cycles etc? While others are slower and allow them to catch up on their inbox?Don't query (me) between December 18 and January 3. Otherwise I don't care.

@UweStenderPhD Ack! I missed this! Dang this having a life stuff. How hard is it for you to actually go on vacation, and turn off the agenting?
Brutal. But after 13 years of NOT DOING that, I now, finally, HAVE TO/MUST.

@UweStenderPhD What your favorite book of all time? That's tough. But if you told me that I could never ever read anything other than THAT book, I'd pick: Gottfried Benn
"Sämtliche Gedichte." HE was a misunderstood genius whose poetry is HEAVEN and everyone else's is garbage. (Which is why I cannot read poetry at all anymore.)

@UweStenderPhD Hi - About a year and a half ago, I received a rejection for a novel. Since then, I've since completely axed and rewritten the first three chapters. Would it be ok to query again when beta reads and edits are finished (I'm thinking another 3-6 months)?Sure, but the changes have to really be MAJOR.

Mateo Askaripour @AskMateo
@UweStenderPhD Hey Uwe - if an agent's guidelines ask for the first chapter (& doesn't include an OR ## pages), and I have a prologue, should I send both the prologue and chapter 1 or just chapter 1? I know it typically depends on an agent's taste, but what would you say the default is?Hmmm, both.

@UweStenderPhD During my last querying process, I noticed that a lot of agents take several months to get back to writers. But Triada took maybe only a week. How are you guys able to respond so quickly? And thank you for doing soIt's a long story directly related to the beginning of #Teamtriada. But it is too long an origin story for Twitter.

@UweStenderPhD Another Q - is 50k words for an adult novel acceptable, or does it show a need for more substance? My WIP literary adventure has been holding steady around there, and it seems short yet I don't want to compromise the overall tone.It may be absolutely perfect, but *I* would reject it for the brevity reason. So I would miss out.

@UweStenderPhD If you receive a query for a book and reject it what is protocol for sending another book that is completely unrelated to the first? (If they both seem to fall into your interests)Just query me again. I did not reject you, just the one particular project.

@UweStenderPhD This is not as much of a tips/tricks question, but I assume seeing your last post that I'd be best served waiting until after your vacation to shoot a query? Not necessarily. The single most difference to queries during that time is that I don't respond unless I am interested, which my out of office message CLEARLY conveys. I will still read upon my return, but not respond per my SPECIFIC message.

@UweStenderPhD Hi Uwe! Do you think the season your book is published in makes any difference to how well it does?Possibly. In the fall A LOT of books are up against best selling authors or lead titles. And that could be detrimental. At the same time, it could help, as more books are often sold. So, I guess in the end...it does not necessarily matter.

Can a memoir be written by two people about their experience or would it be considered an OwnVoices? It's based on a true story but not every aspect is true #askagent#ownvoices typically means that you and your character share at least one aspect of a marginalized identity. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #askagent I'm querying a new MS. But if you've got other books published through small press, should you mention the number of copies you've sold? (i.e., over 5,000 copies sold since publication in 2015)I don't think you need to mention that in the query. The agent will likely ask later #askagent

Shannon Fisher @MsShannonFisher
@BookEndsJessica How much detail should be included in an initial nonfiction pitch? Three paragraphs (author's bio, platform, and synopsis)? Or should writers include a full outline? #askagentblurb (not necessarily synopsis)--like back cover copy, author bio and platform should be enough for the query. #askagent With nonfiction the platform is vital.

@BookEndsJessica I was told once that agents hate it when writers sub to publishers accepting unagented ms. If that is available to us, shouldn't we give it a go?Another issue is that you've now possibly closed the door on that house. Even if you submitted to the wrong editor, or with an unrevised book. #askagent
