@BookEndsJessica My essay that provides an overview of my memoir was recently published in a national publication. Do I include a mention of this in my query and, if so, how?I would. I would just state it somewhere in the opening or the closing. #askagent I think what you say above is pretty much what you'd say.

@BookEndsJessica If you came across a self-published book that was wonderful and had lots of potential in a larger market, would you contact the author to inquire about representation for selling the book to a large publisher? Or do you not consider self-published authors at all?In fact a lot of us keep our eyes peeled to do exactly that #askagent

Or do you not consider self-published authors at all? That being said, if I find a terrific self-published book what I'll do is contact the author and see if she's interested in traditional publishing and ask her to send her next book. #askagent

It's a harder transition to take an already published book traditional now. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica @chelseasfiction Hi, based on your answer, I have a question: how do you know what the market is at the time? Thanks. As an author you likely won't. Part of my job is to talk with editors all the time to find out what they're looking for and what they're tired of. I get a sense of what's selling, what's hot, and what's not. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #askagent My first chapter is ten and a half pages. If an agent asks for the first ten pages with the query letter, would I be pushing my luck if just sent the whole first chapter, or should I truly stick to just ten pages?I think 10 1/2 will be just fine. Good luck. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica I fell my Query is a bit long but having a really hard time cutting it. Does having a QL that's a page deter an agent or is ok?Hmmm. Have you looked at the manuscript? Might that need cutting too? Maybe the query is indicative of something larger? In a nutshell, if you feel it's too long then I would say it's too long. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Hi! I have a silly question. Is it ok to use a pen name? And will that affect me in any way in the future? It is okay and the only impact it might have is that you'll be required to use it forever (ala Nora Roberts). #askagent

@NaomisLitPix #askagent if there is magic and high tech in a story, what genre is it? (may be dumb question but it is what I am writing)Depends on the setting, likely! Is it a sci fi with magical elements or a fantasy with sci fi elements? #askagent

@NaomisLitPix If you have written a trilogy, but the book you are querying could stand alone, do you mention the others in your query letter? #AskAgentYes, Especially if part of the series is published already. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #askagent I write in multiple genres. Should I mention this in my query bio? (Thinking a short sentence.) I’m hoping to find an agent who might be interested in other ms down the line.I would not. Focus right now on the book you are writing. #askagent

@NaomisLitPix What is the best way to obtain representation for work if you're seeking to work within multiple genres?Seek agents who work within all those genres and have that conversation when an agent offers rep. #askagent

#AskAgent More than one agent has recommended that I get an editor to look at my ms. I plan to. After I make my edits, would it be a okay if I re-queried any agents that have rejected me, mentioning that my ms has been prof. edited? This is something I don't mind at all, but some agents do mind. Ultimately, worst they can do is reject it again. But if feedback was given for the rejection related to not a fit for wishlist, etc, it might have been rejected for reasons which editing can't resolve. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Say you get a submission with solid voice and excellent plot - the MS is complete but still needs work. How do you determine which books to take on? What are the biggest factors? #askagentIt usually doesn't "need work" from the author's point of view. We take on books that we see need very little work, that we think are fantastic and that the market is asking for #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #AskAgent Unless the agency explicitly says "a reply from one agent is a reply from all" and makes it clear they share queries, is it okay to query more than one agent at an agency if you get rejected?Yes, I think if the agency doesn't explicitly say they have that policy, then you should go for it. Just as long as you're submitting to one at a time. #askagent

@TLSherwood1 @BookEndsJessica #AskAgent Since I am curious about the answer.Yes, I would check the agent website. If they do not have a "no reply means no" policy then look to see if they have an estimated response time listed and check in after that period of time has passed. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Should a writer check back with an agent if they get no reply and no confirmation the email query went through? If you didn't get a confirmation, I would check in with the agent because it might not have gone through. But no reply from a @bookendslit agent is not a no. We respond to all queries we receive, regardless of how long it takes. #askagent
