@BookEndsJessica If an agent asks for a bio in addition to the query letter, what should that include beyond what I would normally put at the end of my query letter? #askagentnothing unless you have something extra to include #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Other than romance and politics, what genres are selling currently? #askagentMysteries, suspense, thriller, domestic suspense/thriller, SFF, picture books, YA, middle grade, nonfiction, women's fiction---all genres we've recently sold btw. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Do you think a Twitter account with lots of content (lists on Facebook, images, hashtag contests, a music video) has a chance at becoming a book? Obviously it would require a full proposal, but would the social presence play a part in the decision? #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Hey just a quickie #askagent Online advice is don't attach files to submission queries. But when you've written a letter, a synopsis and the first X pages you're asked for, the email body seems far too long. Is "don't attach files" right? If it's requested material you will be expected to attach the material #askagent

@BookEndsJessica If you are trying to get published for the first time are agents more likely to say no if you are trying to query a first book of a series? I've heard its harder to get agents to take on series. #askagentI think this depends so much on the book, the genre, and the sub-genre. in some genres a series is expected (cozy mysteries), others are more trilogy oriented (YA). I don't think any agent will say no just because it's a series #askagent

Plus it's important to remember that emails with files can often get stuck in spam. If they want all that info in the email body, go for it. #askagent

@bookendslit @BookEndsJessica Not trying to be snarky, just curious-why do some agents not respond at all when they could send a form rejection? #askagentThe policy at @bookendslit is to respond to every query, no matter how long it takes. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #askAgent. Comps. 1) What if they fit your novel but have received mixed reviews?2) What if they are represented by your targeted agent? If too similar to your work, will your agent not want you as a client? 3) When can you skip comps? Thanks. You can always skip comps. I think only a small numbers of the queries I get include comps. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Thank you for your reply. I am pulling my hair out while thinking how to remove 47k words out of my ms to make it 100k. It’s almost impossible. ;)Yes. That's a LOT of extra words, but my guess is your manuscript will be better for it. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica @bookendslit It can be conveyed, but the query letter format I tend to see feels averse for me discussing the culture of the characters. I feel I am supposed to remain focused on establishing goal, motivation, and conflict. If I lead with culture will that make me seem unfocused? Not if its really setting up the world building #askagent

@BookEndsJessica What’s the best way to approach an agent at a writing conference? #askagentNo really, the best way to approach an agent is the way you would approach anyone, with real interest in getting to know her and have a conversation, not just to pitch. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica My dragons are different from typical dragons to the point that I feel they're new and fresh. Do you (or anyone @bookendslit) have any advice on how I should establish that in a query without sounding like yet another lunatic shouting "I'm different I swear!" #askagentHow do you think the publisher will convey that to a reader? If you're struggling the publisher might too & then I ask, "are they different enough?" #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Middle grade nonfiction ... do a need an agent to sell it? Or should I be querying publishers directly? #askagentThe smallest part of an agent's job is selling the book. We negotiate a strong contract, help with career planning, editing, ideas, revisions, career management & handling difficult situations/conversations with publishers whenever needed #askagent

@RebeccaRPierce Sure! It's important to remember that, as a series, book 2 & 3 are entirely dependent on book 1. If book 1 doesn't sell, book 2 & 3 don't have a market. Blurbs & synopses help you plan out a series, without investing too much time. #askagentIf you focus on writing the next thing, if your series doesn't take off, you have something with it's own merit to get back into the querying trenches with. #askagent
