@BookEndsJessica #AskAgent Do agents pitch to one editor/publisher at a time, with who they think would be a good fit, or do they pitch to several at the same time?Unless it’s option material that we’re contractually obligated to only send to one editor, we send it to a bunch at the same time. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #AskAgent Besides the story itself, what does an agent hope for in a client? What makes a "good" client (or a nightmare one)?Someone open to revisions, critique and brainstorming. Someone willing to work hard on the book as well as marketing & social media. Someone who communicates & asks questions. Someone who sends presents (that one is a joke...sort of). #askagent

@BookEndsJessica What are your thoughts on using a book the agent represents as a comp? (For context: they're similar in voice/style, but not in theme/plot) #askagentI think it's a good idea. You at least know the agent knows the book. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica What's your current dream submission? #askagentI'm still looking for domestic suspense, but am tired of the husband/wife scenario. I'd like one featuring a mother and child or a friendship. #askagent #MSWL

@BookEndsJessica What are your thoughts on using a book the agent represents as a comp? (For context: they're similar in voice/style, but not in theme/plot) #askagentThis is great, as long as it's accurate. I get a lot queries referencing my clients' works when it's clear they don't really know anything about the book and there's no similarity. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica What's your current dream submission? #askagentDoes it just have to be one dream submission? I'd love a dual timeline women's fiction too, but ala Next Year in Havana featuring diverse voices. #askagent #MSWL

@BookEndsJessica #askagent What is considered a good average (ballpark) number of sales for a debut novel? Or average range (high/low)?I can’t answer this. It really varies too much by genre and format to say. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica What's your current dream submission? #askagentOhhh... I'd love commercial women's fiction with a dual timeline ala Kate Morton. Also compelling YA, WF or romance with diverse characters, that doesn't sacrifice plot for themes. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #askagent Hello. I was suggested not to hire editor for my ms because any agent will request to use their preferred editor to edit ms again. Is it true? Thank you.Well, my preferred editor for clients is me. I almost never refer my clients to outside editors. I think the same is true for others at BookEnds. You want your manuscript to be polished when submitting to agents, but that doesn’t necessarily require professional editing #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Hi Jessica! Thanks for doing this. :) I'm wondering what makes the difference for an agent when rejecting a full vs. offering a writer an R+R? Thank you so much! #askagentThe big thing is whether I want to see that book again and if I have ideas to make it stronger. I don’t want to encourage a writer with an R&R unless I’m truly interested. And, truthfully, I’m more likely to just offer and take a chance than give an R&R. #askagent

@BookEndsKim If I'm planning on referencing things the agent asked for on their blog/agent bio/mswl in the first paragraph of my query, how long should that paragraph be? #askagentI agree with @BookEndsJessica. Just a sentence or two, but yes, definitely lead with it. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #AskAgent Besides the story itself, what does an agent hope for in a client? What makes a "good" client (or a nightmare one)?Good communication. A willingness to edit and listen to other people’s opinions. No tendencies toward tantrums. #askagent

@BookEndsKim If I'm planning on referencing things the agent asked for on their blog/agent bio/mswl in the first paragraph of my query, how long should that paragraph be? #askagentI don't think it needs to be longer than a sentence or to frankly. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica What are your thoughts on using a book the agent represents as a comp? (For context: they're similar in voice/style, but not in theme/plot) #askagentI like it when I get queries like that. I don’t think you need to have comps, but if your comp is one of my clients, it certainly doesn’t hurt. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #AskAgent Does the agent act as intermediary to the editor, or do author and editor interact directly (during edits)? The editor and author typically interact directly during edits, though the agent is there to step in if needed. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Hi! Thanks for doing these!Q: If you have a few queries out and one requests a manuscript, should you follow up with the other queries or wait until an offer of representation/publication is extended? Or neither? #askagent
There is no reason to inform other agents of a request, I'd wait until you have an offer. Most agents will assume others are reading. #askagent

If your manuscript is first in a series, should you mention that in the query? Does the answer change for first time authors? #askagent #amquerying #querytipYou should mention it is the first in a series always! It changes how we might envision the book. #askagent

@NaomisLitPix Went from middle grade to YA. I kept a few characters. I feel like it could recognizable but it's really a different story. Was fantasy but now is romance/ fantasy.Well my recommendation would be for you to let agents know it's a major revision of a previously seen title IF they requested to read pages. If just the query was rejected, you can prob just re-query.
If any other #askagent folks want to weigh in on this that would be cool!

@BookEndsJessica Good Morning. Could a novel about a 21 year old not in school but lives at home because she's the daughter of a mob boss be considered YA?No, she would really be too old for YA #askagent
