Valerie Norris @ValerieANorris

I queried a number of agents about a novel, then realized the story was vastly better if I deleted the beginning. Have I ruined my chances with those agents? #askagent
Replying to @ValerieANorris

You can withdraw and resubmit through QueryManager if you subbed to BookEnds and the agent hasn't responded yet - but in general it doesn't sound like enough would have changed to re-query those agents that have already declined. #askagent

Melody Haaf @MelodyHaaf

#askagent does the title have anything to do with a pass or request. I had named my book Twenty-two Saints and have changed it to Awake While Sleeping.
Replying to @MelodyHaaf

FWIW, "Awake While Sleeping" doesn't really tell me anything about the genre/story. And while we can always change a title before it goes on submissions to editors, a query with a stronger title might be read faster. #askagent

Meliha Sheikh @meliha_sheikh

When considering a writer, does the fact that the author doesn't reside in America or isn't American (PoC included) effects your decision? #askagent
Replying to @meliha_sheikh

I have clients that don't live in America and/or aren't American citizens. Location doesn't really affect my decision, as long as the author or illustrator is interested in hitting the American markets (and their work is something I think I can sell here.) #askagent

A.M. Hall @AuthorAMHall

@TracyMarchini @ailadoyle2 Out of curiosity, are your total queries so much higher in the early months of every year? Are there certain times of the year that are high volume?
Replying to @AuthorAMHall

So far that pattern is consistent, with the exceptions being months I do more interviews or conferences leading to a higher volume as well. New Year's resolutions = high volume, summer (July/August) and the last few weeks of the year (holiday crunch!) = lower volume #askagent

@NaomisLitPix @TracyMarchini Clearly detailed feedback is impossible, but what about one liners? "Not right for the current market", "Writing quality not there", or "List too full with similar projects." Anything like that would be enormously helpful to budding authors.
Replying to @DanielMScanlan

As much as I hear you on this, please refer to the other #askagent answers about how we must prioritize our time toward our signed clients first and their submissions, revisions, editor communications, covers, blurbs, promo strategy, next projects, subrights, contracts, etc etc.

E.C. Farrell @celiselott

@NaomisLitPix Almost six months. I've heard that's the appropriate time to follow up, but I've also heard sometimes agents don't want you to follow up? I know agents are busy.
Replying to @celiselott

Six months is plenty appropriate for a followup. I personally say three months, but you're correct that many agents have specific guidelines on their websites. If there are no followup guidelines, do send a polite inquiry. Worst that can happen is a no. #askagent

#askagent I've been thinking of writing a Portal/High Fantasy but I'm seeing several agents actively stating they don't want portal stories. Is Portal Fantasy anathema now?
Replying to @FrostruneDragon

Like any fantasy right now, if you're going to write something that has been done successfully in the past, make sure you break the mold and approach it from a wildly new angle, or twist the rules. Every agent has diff preferences. #askagent

Kritika Rao @kritika_rao

They say if you aren't getting requests for partials/fulls, problem is your query not book. But what if *some* agents said, send us another ms you have or specifically said in their rejection that they liked the pitch but you still don't get asked for partials or fulls? #askagent
Replying to @kritika_rao

Case by case answer to this one. I ask for pages in addition to a query, so when I reject, it's often based on both the query+writing, or query wasn't for a story I want to rep, or the query was wonderful but writing didn't hold up. That rule isn't black&white for me #askagent

Everyone has different standards for the authors and projects they are looking to rep. Sounds like it was a personal decision, not a flaw in your approach, but @AgentJessicaA may have more insight than I do! #askagent

Bored characters make bored readers. You NEED a stronger catalyst for action in a story than "His life was unbearably dull so an exciting story started happening to him."

Sandra Cormier @Chumplet

@TracyMarchini @colin_d_smith @BookEndsJessica I should probably stop labeling it YA, even if a teen is the main protagonist? #AskAgent
Replying to @Chumplet

YA always has a teen protagonist, but that's not the only marker of what YA is. YA stories are usually those where the teen shifts from childhood into the beginnings of adulthood, they find their place in the larger world outside of their family, etc. #askagent
