dawn is on edit mode @DoveReign_
@BookEndsJessica Is it preferred to add your phone number in the end of the query? #askagentYes! And definitely on your manuscript. I hate when I want to surprise an author with an offer but there’s no phone #. #AskAgent

AJ is probably trapped in a delayed train @Ajay_H_Kumar
@TracyMarchini @BookEndsJessica Thanks! As a follow up can I ask what is currently hot and/or what you think will be hot? I've seen a lot of requests for MG, while Adult F seems to be plodding along.I can't speak to adult because I only rep books for children and teens - but the reason middle grade is an evergreen request is that it's just so hard to get the voice right. #askagent

@Ajay_H_Kumar I'm going to defer #YA questions to our other agents. I think @TracyMarchini is floating around and might be able to better answer. #askagentI think YA fantasy is a hard sell at the moment, but like some of my colleagues said, there's always room for something fresh. (It's just really hard to find that unique twist when there's so much out there!) #AskAgent

@BookEndsJessica @AgentJessicaA Thank you so much for taking questions! Is it okay *not* to nudge an agent who has a full even after months? I worry that I'll seem disinterested if I don't reach out but I'm just trying to be patient. #askagentI think if you're not comfortable nudging that's fine too. Just keep querying & also, remember when it's important to take control of your own career. #askagent

Naomi Davis @NaomisLitPix
@BookEndsJessica @jenwoodrum As a followup: sci fi is so broad it can include worlds that have dystopian feels and worlds that are far removed from it. Consider WHY the dystopian elements are there, and whether it would make a stronger, more rooted sci fi if framed without them.
Literary Agent
Naomi Davis @NaomisLitPix
@BookEndsJessica @jenwoodrum Indeed I am floating! As my colleague Natascha said, we are experienced readers. When a dystopian is rebranded as SF, we see thru that, as dystopian has core elements we associate with that genre. But if the SF&plot is strong, a "dystopian feel" won't necessarily be a barrier.

Jovok @JovokWolf
Are potential authors getting more whiny? If so, how do you deal? The longer I query, the more I see agents having to tiptoe. I saw a tweet where an agent complained about queries starting "i know you probably wont read this.." and I'm exhausted just thinking about it. #askagent
Nah. Authors are like anyone else in the world. Some are whiny, some are nasty, most are wonderful and kind. #askagent

Julie Weathers @Julie_Weathers
@AgentJessicaA @BookEndsJessica Because she's a southerner and according to one person, "On the wrong side of the fence." Well, yes, but the war is fought in her backyard, which makes for exciting times. Thank you for replying. #askagentIt might matter to some people, but there have certainly been other books about people on the wrong side of the war. Depends on the story. #AskAgent

#BookEndsChat #askagent do you recommend having a website/author page even before querying an agent for your first book? Is that presumptuousness, confidence, a bad/good plan? Thanks!I don't think you need a website, but you do need a social media presence. #askagent

#BookEndsChat #askagent do you recommend having a website/author page even before querying an agent for your first book? Is that presumptuousness, confidence, a bad/good plan? Thanks!I don't think it's necessary - I think the more important thing is to make sure whatever profile you do have (be it website, twitter, etc.) is geared towards being a professional writer. I do google before I offer. #askagent

This likely varies from agent to agent. I like to just consider one manuscript at a time, but if it’s something that hits my MSWL…I wouldn't want to miss out on it so send me a note about it. And definitely mention the other material. #AskAgent

Julie Weathers @Julie_Weathers
@BookEndsJessica @AgentJessicaA I have a Civil War historical about a woman who becomes a spy, sometimes spies wear crinolines. She's a southerner, so I'm wondering if this is going to be a turn off to a lot of agents before they even look at it. #askagentI’m not following. Which part of it do you think is going to be a turnoff? But, no matter, just query. The worst that can happen is you get a no. #AskAgent

Aila Doyle @ailadoyle2
@AgentJessicaA Thanks Jessica. Do you generally feel that the queries you receive are well-formed and polished?Generally, yes. Though there’s probably at least one terrible query every day. And it doesn’t take a perfect query for me to request, but it needs to at least be competent. #AskAgent

Matt Wainwright @mattwauthor
@BookEndsJessica #AskAgent Are you impressed by descriptive writing in a query? Or would you rather just have the characters, setting, arcs, stakes etc put as simply and clearly as possible? Asking for a friend ...I like to hear the voice in a query, but it's more important for me to get sucked in enough to want to read the book. Like back cover copy. #askagent

Serena Louise @Serena_L_Thomas
Query question, if you request "the first 3 chapters" would you expect the writer to include the prologue if they have one along with the three consecutive chapters, or would you class the prologue as a chapter and want chapter 1 + 2 only? #askagent #BookEndsChatI don't think anybody would mind if it was prologue and first three chapters - BUT - 9 out of 10 times it seems that the prologue is unnecessary... #AskAgent

#askagent last question, Do you guys every pass queries between each other?Sometimes but not always. If you get a pass from one of us, certainly feel free to query another BookEnds agent who you think might be a good fit. #askagent
