@UweStenderPhD #askagent When should an author follow up w/ an agent who has their full manuscript?I'd give it 3 months.
Literary Agent
Marie Lestrange @LestrangeBooks
@UweStenderPhD Sweet spot on horror wordcount?Hmm, no clue...maybe 80-90 k...just a guess.
Literary Agent
Michelle Cruz @TXMichelle_Cruz
@UweStenderPhD How important is nailing the genre in a query? For example, someone queries as upmarket mystery, but w/agent experience, you feel it's WF or literary fiction. Is that an auto-reject? And what makes the difference between reject/R&R/offer?Thanks for your time!
You should be clear on the genre.
If I LOVE a book, I offer. If I LOVE the book, but have some concerns, I will ask for an R&R. If I don't love it, I will pass.
Literary Agent
Dr. Sara Kapadia @sarakapadia
@UweStenderPhD If an agent passed on a manuscript and then I sent that to a different agent at the same agency,A. Do I mention the other agent passed?
B. Will the other agent be influenced by the first agent's decision
A. No.
B. That's why A. is a No.

@UweStenderPhD I know our MS should be as polished as possible before we start querying. With that said, what type of things are you willing to forgive if you LOVE the premise/voice?Thank you for doing this! Enjoy the pond with the pups!
Thank you, I am.😎
If I love the premise and the voice, I will forgive everything, except too many spelling errors and/or gerunds.

@UweStenderPhD For debuts, do you take on duology/series or only stand alone books?I take whatever I love.

@UweStenderPhD A question I've been dying to ask. As a new author, I tend to query the associate or newer agents at an agency. I wonder how much support they get from the more experienced folks in the way of locating markets, making contacts etcAt Triada US, they do get all the support. I cannot speak for anyone else as I don't know what others are doing.

@UweStenderPhD If I'm pitching a trilogy do you recommend waiting to write the second and third books until I see how the first performs? Or should I get it all written and then tweak as appropriate? It depends on where you are in your plan. In essence, having Book 1 finished and ready with clear ideas on Books 2 and 3 should be fine. Why write book 2 if book 1 does not sell? Yet, it depends on circumstances and your choices.

@UweStenderPhD Hi Uwe! I was wondering about re-querying. If the MS has been heavily revised, is it legitimate to re-query an agent, while mentioning that they did previously reject it but changes were made as per their notes? #askagentSure. The agent may say NO to the re-read, but it's worth a try.

@UweStenderPhD How do you feel about author's withdrawing queries to revise?Example: Several agents bring up the same issue when rejecting a full ms, so the author wants to revise. If you were still considering the full, would you be ok waiting to read the new version?
Yes, as long as I did not already start reading...

@UweStenderPhD If you’re self published and your book only did okay, does that hurt your chances of getting an agent for a new project? No, not for a different project. No worries.

@UweStenderPhD Asking for a friend: Let's say an author queries you. Before you respond, they get an offer from a publisher that temporarily opened to unagented authors. If that author informed you about the offer, would it sway you or would you move their query up the list? Thanks!
It might as long as I love the book, and the publisher is a big one. HOWEVER, again, I would still need to love the book or else, even with a nice offer from a Big 5, I don't want to rep stuff I don't love. I suspect other agents may feel differently.
Literary Agent
Kristi McManus 📚 @kristimcmanus
@UweStenderPhD Thanks for this! If an author has an offer of pub from a small press and queries the project to agents for rep, is that considered a positive or negative when considering the ms?I think it depends on the prestige of the small publisher in regards to positive influence. But I don't think it is a negative influence no matter what.

@UweStenderPhD Do you or other agents immediately trash queries if they aren't expressly in the categories outlined in your wishlist, or is it possible you'll be interested in something outside of your norm? :)Also... Did you bring your dogs to the pond??
I am open to anything but ADULT Sci-Fi and Fantasy. And yes, they LOVE the pond.
Literary Agent
Jenna (J.M.) Jinks @AuthorJMJinks
@UweStenderPhD Hi Uwe! Love when you do these, thank you. I was pubbed with a micro press and now querying agents (for unpubbed ms) does that past experience hinder chances with querying?Thank you. No, in my opinion, it does not.
Literary Agent
Sarah M. Chen @sarahmchen
@UweStenderPhD If I query with a YA but then you request pages and read it and say it's adult, is that an automatic pass because I didn't categorize it correctly? No, not if I love the book. THOUGH, it could be problematic. If I love BOTH chamomile tea and raspberry tea, and I ordered chamomile, but you give me raspberry, I may still not like it for THAT singular reason.
Literary Agent
Elle Grey @ElleGrey9
@UweStenderPhD At what point do you cut your loses and scrap a ms? Is there a certain number of rejections? Or wait a period of time and try again? As long as there are still legitimate agents around, query.
Literary Agent
Sarah Floyd @kidlitSarah
@UweStenderPhD I signed a contract with a publisher shortly Before they made a serious, very public error in judgment, which has negatively impacted their reputation. In your opinion, will their authors carry the burden of the damaged reputation, like guilty by association? Thank you!I don't know. Unless you are in publishing, most people just buy the book and don't care or know who the publisher, the editor, the agent etc. is.
Literary Agent
Laura Wetsel @LauraWetsel
@UweStenderPhD I see you're looking for a YA like TO ALL THE BOYS I'VE LOVED BEFORE-- would you be interested if the romcom vibe of that title were crossed w/ something more politically provocative like MOXIE (but instead set in 2003 w/ the subtext being 9/11)?Historical YA...maybe, if the book is great. I love both comps.
