@UweStenderPhD How important are comps in the query letter? A nice addition or a must-have?They help, for sure, because they show you "have done your homework."
Literary Agent
Dr. Sara Kapadia @sarakapadia
@UweStenderPhD #askagentIs it advisable to query agents who have passed on a full with a different book?
Sure. I never reject the author, just the book. I have several clients whose first two or three queries I rejected, but loved the newest one.
Literary Agent
Dave Williams @DaveWil43077085
@UweStenderPhD What makes you roll your eyes and immediately pass on a query?Grandiosity.
Literary Agent
Nancy Parish @nancyparish
@UweStenderPhD Welcome back!! Is there a market in YA for cozy mysteries? #askagentWell...cozies are usually not involving teenagers, but I don't know. I guess it depends on the book.
Literary Agent
Guyrandy Jean-Gilles @guyjeangilles
@UweStenderPhD Is there any actionable revisions to make to the "didn't connect with voice" feedback? No, probably not.
Literary Agent
My alignment is Chaotic Guilt @Beckswrites4
@UweStenderPhD How much time should pass before I consider no answer to *be* a pass? This is for an initial query which fits MSWL.(I get my second shot next Friday!🧡)
I will always respond, unless I have an OOO message <as currently> that defines when I respond. Thus, if this refers to me, one or the other is in play. With other agents, I don't really know. I would write them off after 6 weeks, personally.
Literary Agent
Laura Wetsel @LauraWetsel
@UweStenderPhD Do you think a query should include whether the manuscript is currently being considered by other agents? (As in, other agents have requested the full ms)Not really. I always assume you are querying other agents. As. You. Should/Must. Don't limit your choices.
Literary Agent
faith a. villanueva @faithavills
@UweStenderPhD do you anticipate that contemporary fiction is going to acknowledge the pandemic, or will future novels exist in a parallel universe where COVID-19 never existed? #askagentI have no idea. I assume they will acknowledge it.
Literary Agent
TJ @jjexists
@UweStenderPhD What do you look for in a first chapter submission that interests you enough to ask for more pages?I only want to see a query. If I like it, I will request. I don't request 10 pages.
Literary Agent
ann zhao @annzhao_
@UweStenderPhD if this is something you can share (totally understand if it's not!), how many queries do you get in a typical week?At least 30 a day, so at least 210 each week for 52 weeks.
Literary Agent
Shanice | Wakanda Forever @twixsftbl
@UweStenderPhD So I wonder... when you rep someone what’s the process for film/tv rights to be sold?I handle the film rights, and depending on the project, and circumstances, I sometimes work with co-agents, but on a non exclusive basis.
Literary Agent
The Scribbling Dragon 🐉 @ScribblingDrake
@UweStenderPhD Is a writer more appealing if they have a deal in hand?Theoretically yes, depending on the deal and whom with, but, for me, I would need to read your book first. If I don't love it, I will not be interested.
Literary Agent
Chelsea Covington Maass @chelseasfiction
@UweStenderPhD When you sign a client, do you want to hear about their ideas for future books before they start a new project?Sure, but whatever the client wants to talk about is fine with me.
Literary Agent
Susan Burdorf @sburdorf
@UweStenderPhD Do you personally feel that changes made to adapt to COVID related connection issues will remain (i.e. use of ZOOM over in person meetings and things like that)I don't know, I'm not suffering from grandiosity syndrome which you would have to to predict the future. I hope ZOOM won't stick, because it overwhelms me, stresses me out,& I hate looking at myself all the damned time. I want to look at a REAL person I am talking to. I NEED IRL.
Literary Agent
Susan Burdorf @sburdorf
@UweStenderPhD What is the best thing an author can do when submitting a project for consideration to help the agent/editor work with the project? This is going to sound ridiculous/dismissive/rude/whatever...write a GREAT book!
Literary Agent
Chelsea Covington Maass @chelseasfiction
@UweStenderPhD Do you ever sell foreign rights prior to selling in the U.S.?On a VERY VERY rare occasion, yes. We have a German original thanks to my brilliant colleague Brent.
Literary Agent
Christopher Roubique @Dreamertide
@UweStenderPhD Is 110k words too long for YA fantasy? Particularly a fantasy not set on Earth. Thanks!
Not in my opinion.
Literary Agent
Shirley Songweaver @Ssongweaver
@UweStenderPhD Is it okay for first book in a series to end on a cliff hanger?Certainly, especially if, despite the cliffhanger, it can still stand alone as well.
Literary Agent
michael leibowitz @michael31781
@UweStenderPhD Thanks for the opportunity to ask a question. Can an author query an agent that he received a rejection from after a certain period of time?Of course, especially with a different project.
Literary Agent
Siobhan Mitchell @siobhanmitchell
@UweStenderPhD Thanks for #askagent! Do you think portal fantasies for MG are too cliched/overdone?I personally am not the biggest fan of portal anything, YET, I am currently reading one I TOTALLY adore, so there is that.
