@UweStenderPhD I heard they changed the pay structure from the typical two payment advance and royalties to a three payment advance structure. I don’t understand it. But I’ve seen critique and it doesn’t seem good. Why’d they do it? Is it good for us?Oh, ok. It's utter BS to pay a part of an advance a year post publication. BUT, I can't change what I can't change. A pandemic justifies a lot of things, but not everything.

@UweStenderPhD Can you share any "must-have" elements that a query includes, or does it always come down to the quality of a sample and your MSWL?I can't speak for others. For me it's simply what I find intriguing.

@UweStenderPhD Happy new year, Uwe. Do you personally offer representation on books you know will fit into the market or ones that you love despite sellability but are willing to champion?I only rep books I LOVE. I am too old to waste my time on market condition drivel.

@UweStenderPhD Let’s say you sign someone. And the book they’re working on is 1 of a series and it gets sold. After that publication of your author wants to work on another stand alone book between book 1 &2, is that something publishing does? Or do you have to finish the series first? It depends on the option language your agent can get you.

@UweStenderPhD When a query blows off your socks, is it mostly the specific project? Or is it a combo of project and author profile/potential?In fiction it's the project. In nonfiction the platform.

@UweStenderPhD How do you balance all the things you have to do in a day/week (reading, revisions, answering queries, talking to editors & submitting, etc.)? Do you have dedicated times for certain tasks or pick based on deadlines or what you feel like doing?Great question. Deadlines and "musts." Currently, I MUST do 1099s and taxes, so I am not reading anything. And I no longer read on vacations. So, if you have a manuscript with me, PLEASE be patient, because I am weeks behind.

@UweStenderPhD What's the last good book you read? Do you have any recommendations?Volker Kutscher: OLYMPIA.

@UweStenderPhD Perfect segue into my question. Do you find the current state of the nation (and the world) affects what you enjoy reading and/or the way you might react to a submission? For me, yes. I don't want virus or pandemic submissions. I LIVE it, I don't want to read about it. Sooo, give me escapism.

@UweStenderPhD Is it taboo to resubmit the same project to an agent if it has been substantially revised after 5-6 months?Taboo is a strong word. I can only speak for myself: if I didn't request an R&R, I am not interested.

@UweStenderPhD How has the consolidation of publishing companies impacted your work, if at all? What does the trend imply for writers and agents in the future? So far so good for us.
I don't know. Essentially, I believe that people who think they can predict future outcomes are narcissistic and delusional, so I am not joining that group.

@UweStenderPhD Appreciate you doing this. If a MS crosses genres, is it better if it does that immediately or slowly (maybe even over two books)?Genre crossing is always potentially problematic.

@UweStenderPhD Oh, one more! Is 55K words for a MG SciFi manuscript worth a look, or too short? Thanks again for the opportunity to pick your brain! It sounds shortish, but it depends on the book.

@UweStenderPhD Querying my first manuscript. It’s “done” but I’m wondering how much agents change to get it perfect? Grammar, story elements, suggestions to add more details here and there? All of the above? Not sure what to expect. Thanks and Happy Holidays!First, they have to love it. Then, yes all or any. Happy holidays!

Derek Douglas @DerekDBooks
@UweStenderPhD If you got a bomb query, a great partial, and loved the story until how the ending played out, would you pass? I wrote an ending that I dont think the market will find publishable and I don't know if I need to charge my vision now to suit getting an agent or try my luckI will always pass if I don't LOVE the entire novel.

@UweStenderPhD Not a writing question, but an agenting one! I’m an NYU grad student studying publishing and applying to literary agency internships, so I’ve been completing sample reader’s reports. What do you typically like to see in reader’s reports when taking on interns yourself? The ability to offer suggestions for improvement even if you did not love the manuscript.

@UweStenderPhD What makes an manuscript stand out to you? Does it have to be perfect in terms of prose and plot, or do you consider the manuscript's overall potential, even if it has some holes that could be fixed with editing?" I know it when I see it" is an annoying answer, but true. If I don't want to do anything else BUT read THAT manuscript, then I want it.
