@UweStenderPhD Hi Dr. Stender! What in your “slushpile” would blow your mind?A beautifully written YA contemporary!

@UweStenderPhD After sending a full requests, what’s an acceptable time to nudge an agent in your opinion (especially accounting for COVID/post-election stress). And would it be better just to let the agent get back to me if/when they choose, without prompting them?
I would wait 3 months. And I think you should prompt.

@UweStenderPhD Yay! Finally saw this in time. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!Do you Google writers to see if what is online matches what they write in a query?
If I want to offer these days, yes, I will. I had two bad experiences.

@UweStenderPhD Thanks, Dr. Stender! I always have so many questions, but I forget them.Yesterday I realized my tab setting was wrong on Wordperfect. (I changed it so it's automatic now.) Do agents care about that sort of stuff? Like if a writer (not me!) is older and does the old double space?
I like MSWord, Times New Roman 12, and double space.

@UweStenderPhD What’s the hottest genre in publishing right now #askagentI really don't know. I *personally*, right now, want YA contemporary, YA and MG graphic novels, and adult suspense.

@UweStenderPhD What has the impact of Covid been on the deadlines and submissions of agents and editors and publishers? Has it slowed the industry? Not really as far as edits and submissions go...

@UweStenderPhD When is it worth mentioning past self published works? Or what kind of sales numbers are successful enough to take notice? In fiction, I only care about the project at hand.

@UweStenderPhD I didn't query at all this week for obvious reasons, but figured I'd start back up again on Monday. I seem to see a lot of agents closing at this time of year, though - is this very common? (Of course, I would only query agents who are open, but still...)In 15 years I have never closed to queries, so I cannot answer that.

@UweStenderPhD Hi! Thanks so much for doing this! When you read a MS and can’t connect with the writing, what does that usually mean? Generally does it have to do with voice or deep POV?It could mean a lot of things. Maybe there is no specific reason. Maybe it just means that the agent did not love it.

@UweStenderPhD If an author is self-published in one genre, but submits to you for a different genre, should she mention her publishing history? And would that be deterrent to you?I think the author should mention it. And, no, I wouldn't care.

@UweStenderPhD How long should a writer wait to hear about a submission from an agent.A full manuscript request? I would check back in after 3 months.

@UweStenderPhD Should authors hold off querying all next week? I’m thinking everyone is going to be distracted. ThxI'd query. Some people may like to have some distractions.

@UweStenderPhD @NatashaHanova Is it a common thing to write a book where the characters are aged as adult fantasy, but it reads more like YA? Would that be popular, or is that too muddled to be marketed correctly?Personally, I think it is too muddled, but I am not an expert in this arena.

@UweStenderPhD I’m currently writing a cozy romance, partly because I need to read lighter fare. Do you think the market for romance will be hot?I don't rep romance per se, so take my opinion with several grains of salt, but I don't see romance disappearing.

@UweStenderPhD I use QueryTracker. What happens if I query my list of agents and everyone rejects? Should I try self-publishing? I don’t want to give up my manuscript because I’m in love with it!If everyone legit rejects, then self publish.

@UweStenderPhD Do you have any thoughts on the baseline platform one needs to successfully pitch nonfiction? I have 20k monthly readers and speak at a handful of conferences each year, but still feel like I need to focus on expanding my platform before pitching the nf projects I'm sitting on.It depends on the project, but, without context, I'd say: keep on building.
