@UweStenderPhD Hi! How far into a full MS do you know if it's a yes or no? Do agents actually read the whole requested MS? Thank you!!I cannot speak for others. MOST of the time I know after 15 pages. Occasionally, I don't know until the very end.

@UweStenderPhD @DanaLDavis Pretty sure you’ve been asked this question before, but what made you want to go into agenting? The love of books. And the thrill of discovery.

@UweStenderPhD @DanaLDavis Do you feel like the current political environment has had an impact on agenting & publishing the past couple of years? Have you seen a trend in your inbox that correlates? #AskAgent #TurnpikeSpecial #PleaseDriveSafelyWell, several nonfiction titles have been and will be selling well. Additionally, since all the pondscum is emerging from the pond, empowering voices have more fight and motivation in them. Especially underrepresented voices have taken the fight to the reactionary patriarchy.

@UweStenderPhD @DanaLDavis I havent had much luck with fantasy so I'm trying out contemporary. What makes a good MG contemp novel in your opinion?I always think voice is so important no matter what. But, I think voice may be the by far most important in MG, because MOST adult writers fail to capture an authentic MG voice.

@UweStenderPhD @DanaLDavis My main character has a part in the Lion King Jr. Musical at school. Is naming the play problematic apart from possibly dating the novel?I would always avoid it if possible, but this one is iconic and performed all over the world, and forever and ever, so I think you are safe.

@UweStenderPhD @DanaLDavis Omg get home safe! Thanks for the impromptu #askagent . Are you seeing a shift in YA trends? Right now it seems to be Space Operas and Contemporary. Is the market changing, or are editors begging for more?I don't get influenced by trends. I go for what I love. That has never changed.

Tobias Salem @TobiasZSalem
@UweStenderPhD @Maria_Tureaud Dr. Stender, within a YA with multiple character perspectives, how many POVs are ideal? What about a few chapters from adults perspectives?I think adult perspectives are problematic. When I was a teenager, I could not care less about anyone even in their 20s. I would keep it to two POVs at the most, unless you miraculously have the gift of creating different enough sounding POVs.

@UweStenderPhD Beyond a fantastic manuscript what do you look for in potential clients?Nothing...unless it is nonfiction.

@UweStenderPhD It's about genre. My novels feature aliens and a few fantastical phenomena, but not the typical SF, not very scientific really. But literary fiction agents would reject bc they don't rep SFF. What to do?I would stick with SFF agents, or write another book. Or just keep querying until you find the right match. Never give up. Sometimes genre is putting writers in a tough spot. So ist das Leben.

@UweStenderPhD When you receive personalized rejections that say your piece not marketable, what do you put in the query to get past that? #askagentI don't know. Except what is not marketable for one agent, MAY be marketable for another.

@UweStenderPhD Also, is 1st person past tense hard to sell in MG?I would not worry about the tense. I would focus on the plot, the story, the characters, the writing.

Heather Lynn Reilly Osial @hlosial
@UweStenderPhD Is it better to write to an agent using their first or formal Mr./Mrs. and their last name? You can call me Uwe. Or Dr. Stender. Mr. Stender is my father. Ms. Stender is not I.

Berinna Chambers @happywriter2017
@UweStenderPhD Hello, Dr. Stender. Are parents present in MG necessarily a bad thing, say, if the plot involves the MC dealing with their divorce? Not necessarily, BUT I would focus on the MG kids, and not the parents.

@UweStenderPhD #askaagent — If there’s a giant twist at the end of a manuscript, should it be given away in the query? It could be, but I would not do it.

@UweStenderPhD I'm working on a WIP where one of the characters is from a mixed status immigrant family. I want to show culture by putting few select words in Spanish. Is this okay? Why wouldn't it? If this were a German immigrant family it would be okay, as long as the German is correct. And the cultural setting etc is as well.

@UweStenderPhD Agents speak a lot about the narrative voice. My focus is MG fiction. Do kids care so much about voice, or are they more interested in plot and theme?Kids want everything. Don't underestimate kids. Frankly, I think 99% of kids are smarter than adults. Just look at what adults have done to this world. So give them great voice, great plots, and great writing.

@UweStenderPhD What is recommended reasons for using comps? I mean, is it plot? Or...? #askagentI Don't know. I assume it is to place the agent in the mindset/type of the novel. I Don't require them.
