@UweStenderPhD Thanks for doing this! Always love these. Curious: If a querying writer gets a "no" from an agent that seems like a form request, but then at the end it says to "consider them in the future," is it sincere or just a nice thought? All my rejections essentially are form - time constraints- though I read each and every query. I always assume a writer will query me again in the future.

@UweStenderPhD Anything one should know before meeting you at say a writer's workshop?I was born and raised in Germany. So to many Americans I appear blunt, or arrogant, or intimidating. Don't judge me on YOUR cultural assumptions. I am there to help writers, that is all.

@UweStenderPhD @samthestewart @Oliverika Would you say this applies to agents across the board? Or does this probability apply to you specifically?I don't know. Other agents hire and fire so they probably pick many more. In my entire career I only ever fired one client.

Kim Green @aviatrixkim
@UweStenderPhD For a query, how long is too long?It depends, but I am not a fan of scrolling too much while reading them.

@UweStenderPhD What else, other than what I listed? (Thanks for taking the time to reply!)I think you pretty much covered it all. Don't forget the greeting and the sincerely part at the end.

@UweStenderPhD How would you characterize the market for food memoirs by international authors? Are publishers interested in faraway settings and lesser-known cultures and cuisines?I am sure there are. I am not an expert on food memoirs, so I cannot give you really good advice. Sorry.

@UweStenderPhD Is there a subject matter that you’ll put down immediately, even though you tried to give it another chance?Yes, anything having to do with Nazis and stereotyping of Germans in books, film and popular culture. I am sick to death of it.
Literary Agent
Samantha Stewart @samthestewart
@UweStenderPhD What percentage of requested manuscripts do you estimate you (or agents in general) end up signing as clients? It is significantly likelier that you will drown in the bathtub than becoming my client. Very low odds. @Oliverika may remember what we figures out a while back.

Erica Davis Secor @thedavisgirl
@UweStenderPhD How did you celebrate your first client/book deal?My first book deal was amazing. I will never forget it. I didn't celebrate it at the time, I had to keep plucking. But every year since, I celebrate it by remembering what it was like, how happy and hopeful I felt, and that it laid the foundation of #TeamTriada. Gratefulness.

@UweStenderPhD are there better/worse times in the year for querying?I can only speak for myself, but between Thanksgiving and January 2, I am probably the most picky during a year.

Stef @StefanieSuzaya
@UweStenderPhD What makes you go YES on a full ms? Does it take you long to respond to a full?Depending on my schedule, which is getting tighter and tighter every day, it will take me longer than it used to. I will say YES to a manuscript when I can't stop reading it, even if it means I don't sleep at all.
Literary Agent
Rebecca Thill @rkthill
@UweStenderPhD What type of picture books usually pique your interest? Are there any specific types that you shy away from? Thank you!I Can't really say. Right now, I have a lot of client PBs I am focusing on, so my selection process may be even tougher than usual.

@UweStenderPhD Firstly thanks for doing it at this hour. i was curious if the book sales for an author always lands with the same publisher? or every book can land with different publishers? (except i guess for series)#TeamTriada has many authors who have different publishers for different books and genres. It all depends on the circumstances.

@UweStenderPhD Should an author in the query trenches be concerned if an agency mainly has their clients' books published with small publishers? I've been told to look at that factor. #askagentI think the author should ask questions about it and make sure the answers are true. Hey, I started with absolutely nothing, and people gave me a shot, so thete. But it depends on the person.

@UweStenderPhD How do you find an agent who can sell your book in Europe after you are under contract with a publisher in US?An agency usually works with a network of foreign rights agents or scouts.
