#QueryTip: Even if you love the idea of working with an agent, make sure to check and see what kinds of projects they're open to before you submit. Agents have to balance their lists, and it's better to wait until we're open to projects in your genre than send something unwanted!

Let's be clear: no one is saying don't trust new agents. New agents are awesome. But have they had good mentorship, have they contributed to agency sales/contracts, do they network with professionals?

Writers, if you see that there's a new agency open to queries & the agent(s) has no current clients, no past sales, & no real bio or experience listed, your red flag should go up. If something feels wrong or shady, it almost certainly is.

You should have sold subrights before/already have a plan in place for your new agency to sell these BEFORE announcing the agency opening (aka, no Coming Soon vagueness).

There's a difference b/w a new agent building their first list and an agent creating their own agency. Creating your own means you should have multiple years/sales under your belt, you should know how to handle contracts/financials (2/?)

#QueryTip: Make sure to check the name, salutation, and gender of the person who you're querying, to be sure that you've spelled everything correctly and used proper pronouns and terms to address them! It's not a dealbreaker, but it helps (at least for me). #AmQuerying

A quick #querytip: be specific!

Don't end your query with, "She must risk everything and face the thing she fears most."

Instead try, like, "She must risk her (job/ego/life) face the thing she fears most: (losing her position/her high school bully/an actual soulsucking demon)."
