#pubtip: When an agent offers you representation, ask for references not only from their published clients but from their clients for whom they’ve yet to make book deals. Those clients’ experiences compared to the others’ will speak volumes about the agent’s character.

Writers. When we suggest your debut be under 100k, it’s not an arbitrary rule. Publishing is a business with a bottom line. A debut is a financial gamble. Books over 100k cost more to print, store, ship, thus a publisher will be less willing to gamble on your 180k tomb. #pubtip

I don’t have much to add to the debut conversation because many wiser authors have spoken. But I’ve spoken to many friends with whom I debuted and we all agreed that the most important thing for mental health and longevity seems to be to recalibrate your definition of success.

If a small publisher requires you to commit to buying copies of your own book--or any book--when you sign a contract, walk away. You shouldn't have to pay them to publish your books--they pay you.

One thing I’d like conference organizers to keep in mind when inviting PoC agents to do query critiques is that we are agents and not sensitivity readers. Too many times I’ve seen PoC agents given manuscripts by white writers with troublesome representation to critique. #pubtip

We are not meant to be shields for misinformed writers and if you want a PoC agent to double their services in providing a manuscript critique and a sensitivity read, then they should be compensated accordingly. #pubtip
