@hatteatime How much do you look at the person submitting and think about how well you'll be able to work together, or is it really just down to what's on the page? #askagentWhat's on the page is the most important thing. However presenting yourself professionally in your cover letter is important - sometimes I can be put off by an arrogant, entitled or unprofessional cover letter. #askagent

@hatteatime I have a traditional deal for book 1 and I am half way through book 2 and I’m looking for an agent. Unagented, It’s a strange path to navigate. What advice would you give for looking for agent?is it best to wait until book 1 is released? When is best to begin querying? ThanksIf book 2 isn't sold, finish that and sub it - I'd say don't worry about whether or not book 1 is pub'd, just say it's due for pub. If you've got a 2 book deal, might be best to sub when you have something new to sell. #askagent

@hatteatime What advice do you give authors struggling through a novel manuscript? XxAsk yourself what you're struggling with. Do you need to make more time? Are you being overly-critical of yourself? or is this not the right project for you, right now? Sometimes it doesn't hurt to switch to a project that feels more fun! #askagent

@AnneTibbets I’ve got a straggler question if you’ve got the time!Trigger warnings. Should we include them in a query for Adult Horror?
Although TWs are not mandatory, I know they are appreciated.

@AnneTibbets If you’re still answering questions, I was wondering how you prefer scene breaks? Paragraph line, hashtag, stars, etc.No preference.
An extra line at the very least

@AnneTibbets Hope it's not too late: On your query form, you ask for the sub's favorite books in the genre in which they're submitting. You're the only agent I've seen w/ that, and I was wondering, what was the purpose? (I liked answering it but didn't think my sub related to those I listed.)I like to see if the writer is well read (or even somewhat "read") in their category and genre.

@AnneTibbets because querymanager has a separate bio box, should authors omit a bio paragraph from the "query letter" box?I've seen authors leave it in, and I've seen authors leave it out...either is fine.
If I had my way a short bio would be in the query, and a more detailed one would be in the separate bio box.
But this isn't a deal breaker. Just a suggestion.

@AnneTibbets Is it obnoxious to nudge an agent or pub on a full if an acceptable amount of time has passed (6+m) but you also can tell from things like query tracker that they're working on making a dent in their pile so haven't forgotten you?I don't think nudges are obnoxious if it's 6+m as long as you're professional.

@AnneTibbets When writers query you, do you prefer them to compare their work to other titles or to other authors in the same genre?Huh.
Never really considered this, but actually, I think I prefer comparative to other authors.
...might change my query form based on this question.
THANK YOU
P.S. This is a persona preference, and honestly, either will suffice.

@AnneTibbets What information do you expect there to be in a query letter? How much detail would you expect there to be to encourage you to keep reading? (Apologies for the stupid question but I've had conflicting advice on this.)I expect pitch para, author bio, category/genre, word count, & any inclusions req'd, like sample pages and/or synopsis. Can't speak for all agents but to me the query is secondary to the sample, so if it's not "perfect" = not a deal breaker. Better too much info than not enough.

@AnneTibbets Is it safe to assume that an agent who doesn't have sales listed in Publisher's Marketplace is inexperienced and/or a scammer?Or are there other resources (such as non-US PM equivalents) I should check before looking askance at them?
Not totally true. Good agent buddy of mine sells shiz ALL THE TIME and doesn't put them in PM unless the pub requests it, so while it's an excellent source, I'd also check Writers Beware, QueryTracker, and DuoTrope

@AnneTibbets do you know if many authors use sites like Autocrit or ProWritingAid before querying, and do you notice if it helps them land agents or publishers? If any of them do they have not said so to me so I can't say whether it's helpful or not.
I CAN say that I once had one of my manuscripts put thru a program by a former agent and I had to go thru and re-edit the damned thing b/c the program (not sure which one?) messed stuff up.

@AnneTibbets @AnnDevon1 Should authors focus special time and attention on query forms (manager) over email submissions? I’ve been told the forms act as filters and agents are moving in this direction. Is it true? It's true that the forms act as filters for us, which is becoming increasingly helpful as our inboxes can get into the thousands, but I don't think there's more likelihood of you being signed off one query over the other.
We still have to read them all, so either way...go forth.

@AnneTibbets Do you prefer authors to write genre novels in past or present tense, or does it not matter? I’ve heard conflicting opinions on this, but I don’t want to write in a style that will turn people away.As long as you execute it well and it fits within the reader expectations of that category/genre, it doesn't really matter.

@AnneTibbets Can women's fiction have a male protagonist? And no romance? I'm not sure how to classify a story with a male protagonist returning to a dysfunctional family after a tragedy. Three generations represented. And a dog. :-)Not WF. That's gen fic.

@AnneTibbets I think a lot of writers want to know what, if anything, publishers are doing to combat piracy. Is there anything individual authors can do to push this topic forward with publishers (without seeming like a crank?)Don't give away ebook copies to questionable blog tours (only use ones the publicist recommends), and if you do, watermark that shiz.
And every time you see one pop up send it to the publisher. If they don't send a C&D then you should.
Not much else you can do, I'm afraid.

@AnneTibbets Advice for writing a synopsis for a query?Keep it one to two pages (single spaced) and give the major plot points and character developments, and leave the details out.

@AnneTibbets First off, congratulations!! Second, thank you! Third, how do you like to see multi-POV stories pitched? From MC POV and a note that there are more?I don't think there's a definitive way to pitch stories like these, but the way *I* pitch them is to describe each story line and MC in one to two lines and then note how they intersect.

@AnneTibbets Just curious about your impression, but among people who read military science fiction, is there more overlap with people who read military non-sf, or non-military sf?I'm going to admit to the world I don't actually know the statistics on this.
I DO know that military SF is a fairly small niche (in publishing) so either lean into it hard to satisfy die hard fans, or soften it to appeal to a broader audience. That's my advice.
