@CortneyRadocaj You liked a pitch of mine in the last year which made my whole day that day (I think March 2021 pitmad?) but at the time my health was really poor & a few edits to my manuscript were marinating. My health has gotten better & so has my MS. Any chance invite to query still open?absolutely!! though it's always nice to get requested material soon after the initial "like" or request, i don't ever have a time limit on them. life happens, and you're definitely welcome to submit whenever you're ready :)

@CortneyRadocaj I have two questions! What are your thoughts on prologues? Also do you ever accept r&r’s after a rejection of substantial revisions have been made with a professional editor? I submitted BEFORE I used my brain 🙄i don't tend to love prologues and usually think they can be cut; i absolutely prefer not seeing them in the initial 5 pages i ask for when authors query, since it's not *actually* the start of the story. i'm perfectly happy with them on requested materials, though!

@CortneyRadocaj How quickly do you typically decide whether you're interested or not? How often do you pass work onto a colleague? Thank you!super dependent on the query - some i know right away aren't going to be up my alley (genre isn't right, huge red flags re: racism/homophobia/fatphobia, etc.) that are pretty quick rejections. most queries fall into a middle ground space where the query is decent, opening

@CortneyRadocaj If you liked an author’s writing and concepts but not one single book, would you be more likely to offer an R&R, representation or reject?it more depends on whether i have a vision for edits. more often than not it ends up being a rejection; there's a lot more to choosing clients than just liking the book, i also have to make sure i'm confident i can help improve it in a way that aligns with the author's vision!

@CortneyRadocaj In a query letter, where should you include writing credits? Before the pitch, after the pitch, attached on a post it note?you can! include that in your bio, which goes at the end of the query. (but don't stress if you don't have any, either!)

@CortneyRadocaj Why is a high word-count for most agents an instant no, when big debut books exist and people like to read them? (coming from someone who just wants to publish their big queer book and slowly but surely loses their mind while deciding how to cut it even more🤧💜💫)mostly bc those big debuts are rare outliers - most trad publishers won't accept manuscripts too far above the standard wc for that genre/age category. it might go up once it's bought and work with their editor, but it's NOT common to have huge debuts.

@CortneyRadocaj How do you like scene breaks in novels? Paragraph space, hashtags, stars, etc.however you like! it honestly doesn't matter to me - paragraph space is maybe the only one i'm not a huge fan of, mostly bc formatting can be weird when reading on a kindle/pasting into QM sometimes. but hashtags, stars, anything else - it's all the same to me :)

@leonicka On a far more serious note though - is there anything you're dying to see right now, whether it just be the way writers phrase their queries, to a certain genre/style of manuscript you would love to rep? #AskAgentThis industry is shifting rapidly and it’s become more important than ever that writers have clear vision for the career they want and resilience for the realities of the business. It’s a long game, friends. #askagent

@annmrose Thank you so much for taking questions tonight! We are struggling to define our book’s genre and we have been told that it fit at least 3 different ones: romcom, WF and NA, which one should we focus on to query? You need to identify your reader. Who is the audience? Rom-com readers and WF readers have different expectations. Who will best be satisfied with your story?
NA never really took off so you can scratch it off your list.

@annmrose Thanks for doing this. I'm looking for insight on when I should let go of a MS when I'm not getting any interest from any agents. Could you ballpark how many rejections/non-responses mean a project is just not going to happen?I mean that’s tricky. If you aren’t getting any asks at all there could be something not working in the query or the first pages, if you are getting asks and then passes there’s something off in the middle. I think knowing when to stop is a gut instinct follow your gut

@annmrose My book is a genre mashup (YA murder mystery in space, with lots of fun fashion and a romantic subplot). How careful do I need to be that I only query agents who rep ALL of the genres? Am I okay querying agents who rep YA SF, or YA mystery?Yes I think that’s fine. I don’t think you have to hit every target but the more you can the better your chances likely are
Good luck

@annmrose How many chapters would you say could be the very least I'm a chapter book?Number of chapters isn’t as important as number of words. Just make sure you are in range for your age group/genre

@annmrose @Sarah_Nicolas Thank you so much for the ask agent session tonight! Assuming you love the story, what are some of the factors that go into deciding whether or not you make an offer to a fiction writer? If I love the story I’m making an offer

@annmrose If a writer queries an agent, is it best to let that agent know if they get an r&r from another agent (on a query)? Also, twins! I love that you love twins! Your MSWL has inspired me! ❤️You only need to let them know if you get an offer.
Twins are so cool! I’m glad I could be inspirational!

@annmrose Hi! thank you for doing this <3 My question is, how much time before deciding an agent won't answer to your full? what is the norm of time responses for full request? (i know it varies from agent to agent, but just from your experience) thank you again 💜I would check in at 3 months and again at 6 months and if they don’t respond to either move on. But if they do respond and just haven’t gotten to it I think 3 month intervals for check ins are totally fair

@annmrose Thank you for answering questions! If I queried an agent a year ago (and was rejected) and my MS has been completely revised, do I mention that in the query? And any suggestions on how to put it in there without it sounding awkward? 😅I think you should mention it and the way to do that could be something like … this title might sound familiar but after some feedback it has been completely rewritten
Some agents have ways of tracking submissions so you don’t want them thinking you sent them the same thing

@annmrose I’ve been super curious about the offer stage! When an agent is done reading a full and decides they want to offer, what happens next? Do they just send out the email letting the author know or are there other logistics steps to the process? Thank you! 💖There is always a call where you both get to ask questions and make sure you’re on the same page

@annmrose If some queries a YA fantasy romance, would you expect to see some hint at the romance and who the love interest is in chapter one?Is it a romance that is in a fantasy world or a fantasy that also has a romance because I think these are two different things. If it’s a fantasy that also has a romance no I don’t expect to see it in the first pages.
