@NaomisLitPix @bookendslit I've got an #askagent question! Would you advise querying for multiple books at once? I've got 2 finished #CrimeFiction lit novels I wrote in prison, related by theme but not a series, and I wonder should I query each separately, or together as 'novels of ex-con journalist Max R'I would say that if they're not part of a series, they should be queried separately. If an agent is interested, they'll always ask what other projects you're working on. #askagent

@bookendslit @NaomisLitPix #askagent Sometimes it's difficult to fit into a specific genre (the big group are fine i.e. fantasy, crime, romance etc. But what about the 'sub-divisions?) What is the best tip you have to figure out which 'branch' the book fits into.Certain genres exclude other things. For example, fantasy can include romance but contemporary romance cannot really include fantasy, so it is fantasy as a category. Make sense? #askagent

If an agent passes during a pitch contest (in person or virtual), should one still continue to query same agent via good oleβ QM? Incase their mind...changes?(please donβt laugh, honest question)#askagentIf they passed on that project specifically, then I wouldn't query them again. But if it was pitched on a Twitter contest where they may have been participating but didn't comment on your Twitter pitch one way or the other, I would say go ahead and query. #askagent

When agents say submit first 10 pages - do they mean double or single? Sometimes the instructions do not state it on the website / QM #askagentI would say double spaced, since that's how we'd want to see the entire manuscript formatted. #askagent #amquerying

@NaomisLitPix @bookendslit #askagent I have 2 questions (if that's ok)1) If you had to estimate, out of all the queries you get, what % do you actually continue on to read the opening pages?
2) Also (estimating again), what % of the total queries would you say are strong, even if you pass?
This is what my queries looked like in 2018. I think the breakdown is probably pretty similar (though this year I've been closed for half the year.)

@NaomisLitPix Certainly. But I don't mean feedback or critique. I mean that perhaps agents could send the same encouraging form rejection they send now only to the above average queries, and a bit more subdued response to everything below that. That can be a form in both cases.I am comfortable with my encouraging form and non-form passes. I truly DO want to see more queries from authors as they grow and write more books. I would NEVER want to be discouraging, and this would defeat my aim to be uplifting in all things I do. #askagent

@NaomisLitPix @bookendslit lovely to hear βΊοΈ do you think a no response rate is any indication the query itself just isnβt good enough, or just that the agent is busy? iβm planning on submitted my next batch shortly but wanted to hire an editor to change it up a bit and have some variety out there. thanks!Could be either. Do you have critique partners? They might be able to let you know if they see areas your query could be amped up. #askagent

What are you looking for when you ask for "target audience" for a picture book. #askagentI don't ask that question specifically in my QM form, but what they might be getting at is if this is a younger (say, preschool) audience or an older picture book. #Picturebooks can technically go up to age 8-12, depending on the subject matter (usually NF) and voice. #askagent

Here are some of my current stats. Unanswered are "unanswered yet" (haven't read them). Of the ones that I pass on, I'm probably only on-the-fence for 5% of them or less. It's usually quite an obvious decision. #askagent

#askagentWhen I published a magazine, I had different tiers of rejections. They all were forms, but some were more encouraging than the others. What seems to me that agents send the same encouraging form rejection to everyone (except than it's an acceptance, naturally). True?
Depends on the agent. I would love to give more feedback, but A: that can do more harm than good on only a small sample of the manuscript, in which a perceived problem may not be representative of the rest of the book, and B: I don't have time with 1000s of Qs per year. #askagent

@NaomisLitPix @bookendslit Thank you all at BookEnds for offering #askagent. Question: in a query does the character want and what prevents them from getting the want belong in the one sentence hook in the 1st paragraph or in the book description in the 2nd paragraph? This is really tough to answer without seeing the query. Write it how it is most dynamic and engaging. Write it so we clearly see the hook. Don't bury the hook in the details. #askagent

@NaomisLitPix @BradleyGosseli1 @bookendslit I was under the impression that in a Query letter we shouldn't say anything about a series but just say it's got the potential, as it may get rejected pretty quick otherwise. Can we mention it then or does it depend on the agent? What genre?
I never reject based on this. I do want to see the first book resolve with a complete, satisfying story, but if it ties into more stories? Love it. For me, the sweet spot is "could be part of a series but does stand alone." #askagent

@NaomisLitPix @bookendslit in your opinion, are things slower in the publishing industry right now? i submitted at the end of september to about ten agents but havenβt heard a peep. iβve heard this is the case for many who are querying, but would love an agents perspective!Things are decidedly NOT slow for the agents of @bookendslit, & I can only speak for me. This week in general I think everyone is experiencing election stress. But four weeks isn't too long to consider those subs dead. You can also send out more subs w/o waiting. #askagent

@NaomisLitPix @bookendslit what are your thoughts on non-standard formatted submissions? along the lines of rupi kaur or sally rooney.I am always eager to see authors try new things. Writing is an art. But also a communication tool. I find sometimes it's harder for an author to gauge if unique formats truly convey what they are trying to communicate outside their own head. Seek lots of feedback 1st! #askagent

@NaomisLitPix @bookendslit #askagentIf querying a middle grade book, can the writer include illustrations they have made since they are also an artist? Or is it better to just send it without any artwork?
If you're an author-illustrator and your art is just as strong as the text (and as other art in the market), then I'm always intrigued! I love illustrated middle grade. #askagent

#askagent What about the fairness and validity of "non-own voices" writing PBs in a culture other than their own? Does it make it OK if they've used sensitivity readers and have a knowledge of that culture from friends, family etc? This is a tough question, but as an author, sometimes I'll have an idea and ask myself "Am I the person that should be telling this story?" and/or, "Is this my story to tell?" and if I don't feel 1000% percent comfortable that it's my space, I leave that space open. #askagent

@NaomisLitPix @jmcgowanbks @bookendslit Which is better? A quick rejection, one thatβs taken a few weeks, or is it all the same? #askanagentNo way to tell within those parameters. Agents are at different levels of backed up/caught up, and read at different speeds, and prioritize things in different ways according to ever-changing demands of our other projects. #askagent

@heybrittanyj Publishing is still very much an apprenticeship industry, so finding a paid internship is your best bet to getting a foot in the door! I found my internship by networking at a writer's conference, where an author offered to pass my resume along to her agent. #askagentOnline networking is also fabulous, and didn't exist in this way when I started. Join Twitter chats in the genres you're interested in, let people know that you're looking, and look for organizations that are helping to get young people in the door (e.g. @diversebooks) #askagent
