@UweStenderPhD Do you have top 3 genres you're looking for now? Or do you prefer being more open ended and surprised by a submission?I always like surprises. But right now: YA and MG graphic novels, Rom-coms and smart thrillers for all ages.

@UweStenderPhD How many pages in should the inciting incident appear?I don't have a definite advice, but I'd say somewhere between pages 8-15.

@UweStenderPhD Thinking about my next writing project - what do we do about 2020? Write the pandemic story, or pretend it didn't happen? What do you think the market will be looking for?I genuinely don't know what the market will be looking for. I personally would be open to Covid existing as a backdrop, ie a murder mystery, or a rom-com etc. But not with it as the primary focus.

@UweStenderPhD What are your thoughts on YA (gothic) horror but told from diverse perspectives and sustainability on the market? Do you think YA horror is going to leave again soon?I don't think it's going anywhere. But even if it did, write what you feel passionate about. If you're a great writer with great passion for your book, you'll write a great book. If you write a great book, it will all work out.

Depends! But keep in mind MG ranges from 8-12 & often kids are reading up or down so reading levels can vary widely. If you want your book accessible to younger readers, shorter may be better, or if parents are reading at bedtime. #dvpit - Personally, I think it's ok if the ch- twitter.com/hemrajaniwrite…Just realized I did this one wrong too (typing too fast, I'm sorry!) #askdvpit

#askDVpit Should our pitches be similar to what you’d see during #sffpit #pitmad or other pitch events or should they focus on marginalized characters/subject matter in the book? Are agents looking for plot or do they want to see what makes your work #dvpit appropriate?pitch like you would in any other event! dvpit is just about the specifics of who is pitching, which doesn't necessarily mean character, altho it can. #askDVpit

@Grahamophones 💯. Any tips on how to pitch that without overcrowding the tweet?I'm really wondering if I need to name each character and their individual motivation or if I can identify the group and present their collective stakes #askDVpit (sorry left the hashtag out
Group & stakes are fine!
Maybe it's warring factions, or a starfleet team, or a cheerleading squad. Whatever it is. #askdvpit
Or if you have ONE character to focus on, that's fine, too. You could do 1st character & then say "2 povs" or whatever it is, so we know this isn't IT.

Are the first one or two pages enough to tell if a manuscript matches your tastes or do you read all 10 - 20 sample pages?#askDVpit
first 2 pgs will tell me if the book is BAD. Always need to read more to see if it's a great fit. (I've read entire manuscripts and then decided not to offer :/ ) #askDVpit

This depends on the query, but I usually read the whole thing regardless. Lots of times the first two pages aren't really where the crux is, so reading to the end gives me an idea if I want to read more & get further in, esp if it just needs an edit. #askdvpit

Do you think the pandemic will affect how many new unpublished authors sign with publishers and agents for the next few years? #askdvpitI don't think this is something we can know until they happen (pandemic + election +++), but I DO know that I and lots of other agents I know ARE selling books right now. Keep in mind, publishing acquires for 2-3 years out sometimes. #askdvpit - If no books are acquired, then-

@AlexAmirBrown i agree with you - but i also have a wishlist of agents i want to query! what if they're closed when i'm ready? what if they open while i'm still in the middle of this new draft? i obv wouldn't query someone who's closed, and don't want to query against what they ask for.Literary Agent

@hemrajaniwrites This varies depending on what the story needs. Chapter lengths can be used as a literary device and not formulaic. That said, most of my MG chapters are around 1500 words.seconding! :) #askDVpit
