@UweStenderPhD Also, if I want to make a major change to my book that I’ve already sent and it will completely change the book into something different, should I send it back out to CPs and betas?I probably would. More eyes see more things.

@UweStenderPhD If a writer doesn’t have any previous writing credentials, what would you like to see in the bio section of the query to pique your interest instead?Any general thing you'd like to share, i.e. "I'm a middle school teacher and live in Buffalo with my two kids and three dogs..."

@UweStenderPhD Thanks for sharing your insight! Just curious, what was your biggest surprise while pitching to a publisher? No need to mention any names...I pitched a book to a big 5 publisher that I thought only a small niche publisher might buy. It was more a pitch out of desperation and no further opportunities. But none of the smaller houses wanted it. It sold to the big one.

@UweStenderPhD You are awesome, Sir! Thank you for doing this! How important do you think it is to pitch your book live, such as at a conference?
Not as important as just simply sending an email query.

@UweStenderPhD Would you pick up a manuscript for something like, say, Lolita in a MeToo era?Great writing. Arguable marketability in current climate.
No. And I never liked it to begin with whatever era.

@UweStenderPhD Would it be better to gain an agent first independently in your opinion? If agented, would an agent be willing to look at co-authored work too?I guess generally yes. Though with graphic novels an author/illustrator combo works always. And if you co-write a book with Rihanna, I will sign you, too.
And yes, I would be.

@UweStenderPhD If we take it as given that good writing, to market, will sell...Do you have thoughts on whether the industry is more geared toward one end of that or the other?
(e.g. decent writing that is marketable v. excellent writing with arguable marketability)
Well, if it is not marketable, then it won't sell. I like great writing, but not pretentious writing.

@UweStenderPhD Hi! Thank you for doing this. Do you find yourself drawn to an opening chapter with instant action, or do you prefer world-building first? Or is it case by case? Thank you! #askagentI usually like to know a little bit about the world and the protagonist, otherwise I feel lost and won't care about what happens to the person. Instant action without context generally disorients me.

@UweStenderPhD How do you feel about multiple queries at once? If someone has 3 MS's that fall onto your MSWL that are complete do you want to know about all 3 in the initial query? If not, how would it be best to address a situation like that?I personally get overwhelmed by too much initial material. So, for me, pitch me your strongest novel, and then, if I offer, we can discuss the other ones which will be very important to me at that very time.

@jmdargz Does having a bunch of self-published books deter agents when the author is querying?no! not unless you’re querying a book that you’ve already self-published — that will make it a tougher sell to publishers, because they don’t want the material already available to readers for less money

@jmdargz Thanks for doing what you do, Jon! Really appreciate the time and effort you invest in the writing community. My question is, when reading the first few chapters of a submission, what are the most critical things/deal breakers that an agent looks for?beyond the obvious (captivating hook, good writing, etc.) I believe that the plot should start by the end of Ch1 — the reader should know what it is and “the quest” (such as it is) should have gotten underway. if it hasn’t, your book should start later. (this is why prologues=🙅🏼♂️)

@jmdargz @ReedsyHQ Thanks! Obvious in retrospect ha. I understand agents receive countless queries. I’m surprised there’s not a way to give a quick response though with a rejection i.e Lacking voice, wrong genre, too long, poor query letter, etc. Something automated. Do you have thoughts to why?I do — agents can get dozens of queries a week! if it’s a “quick response” — say, a minute, which is a lowball — to respond to each query, that can still take hours every week. if we’re also editing, answering emails, negotiating contracts... sometimes there really isn’t time

@jmdargz @AmoryWriting @ReedsyHQ And what if you’ve gotten editorial guidance and are confident in your sub package? I’ve had zero reqs for partials or fulls. At what point is it time to stop because of marketability of the ms? How do you know it’s just subjective?
the dirty truth of publishing is: it’s ALL subjective. you know your pain threshold better than anyone in terms of how long to be on sub. some people keep an eye on new agents and are constantly “on sub”
one q: have you gotten guidance on your query letter? that can be crucial

@JNRlitauthor Yes. If I'm writing a dual POV book and an agent likes my pitmad pitch focusing on the character who isn't in the first chapter. Should I send them pages from that character or just the first chapter? #askagentGreat question! Always send pages from the first chapter. In your query, it should reflect that your book is dual POV. #TheWritersZen

@JNRlitauthor #AskAgent Hello, Ms. Reino! My question is: if a literary agent declines your query by saying, “This project isn’t for me,” are they implying they would have preferred the author finish writing their entire series before querying?Hi! Please feel free to call me Jess :) This response usually means that it’s not a book concept that the agent is interested in and that can be for a number of reasons. And, just because it’s not right for one agent doesn’t mean it won’t be right for another. #TheWritersZen

@JNRlitauthor Hi there! :) Question for you! When a new author queries for the first time, what do you feel most influences a rejection response? The query, synopsis, or sample pages? #AskAgentGreat question and I think it can be any one of those things or a combination. I can only speak for myself but I always read the query first, then sample pages then synopsis. #TheWritersZen

@UweStenderPhD Doing a lot of research for a fiction book, but find I want to write a non-fic too, am blogging some of my findings and gaining small audience, but is it enough to pitch a non-fic at some point? Will a publisher/agent take me seriously on this? elynnhwriting.com/elynnh-1Over the years, admittedly, I've become jaded about nonfiction, as it seems that platform is most important. Due to that weariness, I'm not the best advisor, as for me it's platform, platform, platform. But, CERTAINLY, other agents disagree, b/c nonfiction I turned down, sold.
