@BookEndsJessica How much should I give away in a query letter? I wrote a paranormal romance sequel and I’m not sure if I should tell agents I’m my query letter what the deuteragonist actually isThink of it as back cover copy. How much does cover copy give away? Usually enough to hook the reader. #askagent.

@UweStenderPhD Follow-up question to one previously asked: are you not a fan of multi-POV in general (so one should just query other agents with these), or just instances of too many points of view? Asking as I'm finishing up a 3 POV contemporary YA.I just think it is so tough to do different distinct POVs. Two is great, three is possible...beyond that: "eek, try another agent."

@UweStenderPhD Hello! What makes you want to work with an author, even if ms isn't right for you?If the manuscript is not right for me, then I would not want to work with you until you write a manuscript that is right for me. Two exceptions: Rihanna and Simone Missick.

@UweStenderPhD Glad to hear it’s been a good week. :) I’ve written a book with 6 equal POVs which makes for a challenging query letter. In this case, would you prefer a concise query with common goals of all characters or a slightly longer query with each POVs goals?Oh wow. I personally would prefer a concise query, but admittedly, I would likely not request it either way, because the odds of pulling off a 6 POV distinctly are lowish. But you might of course have done it perfectly, thus query other agents who don't have this reservation.

"As a concept this shows lots of promise but what is missing is the emotional aspect of the plot." I did the pitch surgery in this month's Mslexia magazine. Read my advice on this pitch for a Romantic Comedy novel #askagent #querytip #publishing #romcom

@NaomisLitPix Not sure if you are still taking questions but if you are... I'm drafting the first novel in a three book fantasy series and wondering what the best way is to present the scope of the series to an agent?Best to tell us the primary plot of the first book! With statements like "This is the first in a planned series following the ongoing conflict between..." #askagent

@BookEndsJessica How best to follow up w and agent who has asked for your manuscript a month ago.?A month is probably too soon. At BookEnds our guidelines state we take 8-12 weeks to read a manuscript--don't check before. If it's through Query Manager there's an easy way to check in. If email, simply email the agent and ask for a status update #askagent

@BookEndsJessica @bookendslit @AgentJessicaA @NaomisLitPix #askagent Hi...what are your feelings regarding manuscripts that contain disturbing matters, e.g child abuse, rape, etc. is this a complete no-no, even if its relevant to the story or is this something that you accept in manuscripts within the context? Thanks.I think every agent is going to have a different opinion on this and some people have different triggers. I guess I wouldn't edit a book for fear of disturbing someone. Let the reader make their own choice. #askagent

@RappyWrites I'm also tagging @NaomisLitPix, the @bookendslit fantasy queen. #askagent #MSwlQuerying either is fine - a good agent will want to discuss both of your projects should she be interested in offering rep. 110k isn't prohibitive in fantasy. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica As a first time fantasy author, would it be smarter to qeuery with a shorter (85k) stand alone, or go right in with my Big Project™, the first in a trilogy (110k)?? I am much more excited about the series, but worry that me being new might be a turn off. #askbookends #askagentWith fantasy, I don't think 110k is overly long. You could pitch both, just not to the same agent at the same time. However, if you're more excited about one over the other, go with the one you have the most passion for. Go with your gut. #askagent

Fatmire Marke @FatmireMarke
@bookendslit @BookEndsJessica Does my word count mean I can’t be taken seriously? This confuses me because works like Fahrenheit 451 and the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy were around 40k. I feel as though the word count requirement hinders writers.Of course, that's not always the case. For me personally, if the idea is intriguing enough I will request more material no matter what the word count is. #askagent

Too long sometimes indicates a book that needs editing, too short & the book needs more story. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica I hope it’s okay that I dropped in late. I have two questions - one, what would you want an unpublished author to know about the business/process when you choose to represent them? Two, do you prefer a query letter to open with “Dear Ms. Faust” or “Dear Jessica”? Thank you!

I was asked earlier if I had other blog posts on genre and how to pick a genre. Luckily I have over 10 years of blog posts and I found one that might help. #askagent bookendsliterary.com/2008/10/13/pic…
