@kaitylynne13 If your potential client deals with some [mental] health stuff that means they might have trouble with communication/live appearances/deadlines/inspiration/something else, at which point do you want to know about it? Before signing them? After? Only once it’s relevant?#askagent
That should be up to the writer. If they want to share up front, that's fine. Unless something is actively harming the business relationship, an agent shouldn't force a writer to divulge that until they're ready. #askagent

@kaitylynne13 An established author (8 published novels) author liked my manuscript. Her agent doesn’t rep YA, so author told me to query another agent at agency & use her as referral. That agent passed. Would author’s recommendation carry any weight when querying other agencies? #askagentIf they are your actual beta reader/critique partner, you can include a quote from them. But, unless the agent personally knows that writer, the referral may not be the strongest. Doesn't hurt to include, though! #askagent

@kaitylynne13 Are there markets for short story compilations featuring the same characters, with the characters developing with each story? #askagentThere is sometimes call for this, but it depends how well the original book sells. I don't represent compilations, so I'm not the best to ask #askagent

@kaitylynne13 Do you find that makes it harder to sign a client? Do you ask for other ms’s before making an offer? #askagentWhen I call them, I ask what other ideas they have. Usually, they do brief, query-length pitches or give me cliffnotes. So far, I haven't encountered that chat turning me off a writer. I'm just making sure they have something else, not that they've completed another ms #askagent

@kaitylynne13 Drat! :(It's tough. I encourage people to still query with NA as the category, though. This is a time period that makes sense and I think still needs to be recognized =] #askagent

@kaitylynne13 I've just completed a major gut/rebuild/rewrite of a ms I queried a year ago. Have I really shot myself in the foot for querying it once and now cannot query it again (with the same agent)? If it was that long ago, you are totally fine re-querying #askagent

@kaitylynne13 Thanks for doing this! If an editor liked my tweet during a Twitter pitch contest (expressing interest in being included on future sub lists), is that something to mention to agents while querying or only after representation? You can add in the query that said editor expressed interest during the contest, or you can just keep a note to yourself to mention if the agent wants to call and discuss the story. Either works #askagent

@kaitylynne13 @LitAgentKelly Sort of an add-on to another person's, but if an agent says no thanks to the query, but you heavily revise at the suggestions of another agent, is a requery acceptable? If so, does it need to be to the same agent, even if half the plot and title and scope changed?Never hurts to ask. In the query, mention the story went through an intense revision. If they're still not interested, they'll just send a polite decline and you can move on to the next =] Doesn't have to be the same agent, either #askagent

@Elisabethewrite Depends which story you are currently querying or which is ready to be pitched. If that's your current finished project, not having an agent shouldn't hold you back from pitching it. (hope that answers question?) #askagentAlso, never wait for "proving your worth". Writers with zero pub creds are no lesser than those with them #askagent

@kaitylynne13 Pitching isn't the right word. What I meant by that is, would it be better to focus on something else and bring up the kind of project once you've proven your worth as a writer? #AskAgentDepends which story you are currently querying or which is ready to be pitched. @kaitylynne13 Query Q: Do you give away the big plot twist? "She thought she was a girl, but really she was a PAIR OF GERBILS IN A TRENCHCOAT", or do you just tease the story- "She always thought she was different, but she had no idea just how different"? Random example, lol. Thanks so much

@kaitylynne13 Yay! Well then, what do you think of NA? It's not dead is it? (Please tell me it's not dead!!!) #askagentI want NA to be a true category SO BADLY. That being said, editors aren't super keen all the time, and bookstores don't quite know how to shelve it currently. Depends on the story and if it truly is NA 😕 #askagent

@RebeccaMinelga If the editor says something like "send to me once you get an agent" you'll have to wait till you get one. DEFF let them know in the query with something like "NAME at PUB HOUSE requested this ms after I find representation" #askagencyThere's not really a time limit. They'd hope to get it soon, but it rarely happens. Finding rep takes time. Don't panic! You don't know the editor would've 100% taken it on, so best not to over stress about it. #askagent

@kaitylynne13 If an agent from a no from one=no from all agency requests materials from a pitch then rejects the project, does the rejection preclude submitting to another at the agency? Or does it fall under the requested materials exception to the rule that some agencies have? #askagentIf it was a specific request, you should be okay (if it was from a contest or conference or something) #askagent

@kaitylynne13 This is more on the agenting side of things. Do you have any advice for someone trying to find a remote literary agent internship? I’ve noticed that they’re very hard to find.Publishing is still struggling with "remote" positions. It is hard. I would scan Twitter for any pub jobs or keep an eye on bookjobs.com or indeed.com and stuff like that. It's really about keeping your ear to the ground #askagent

@kaitylynne13 I understand the importance of “platform” for non-fiction writers. To secure representation, how sizable must the platform be? Is there a minimum number of email subscribers, social media followers, etc.? #askagentNonfiction isn't my forte, so I'm not the best to ask. However, you should have some sort of knowledge or standing in the topic you're writing about. Or have done a ton of research on it. I can't give a general # for social media unfortunately #askagent

@kaitylynne13 Multifaceted question, so I'll break it down like Jennifer did.1) How should someone pitch a book with multiple (3-4) first-person POVs?
2) Would it be better to be established with an agent before pitching the book? #AskAgent
Oof, Multi first-person POVs is hard to write so kudos. I would state that in the query. That the manuscript is told in first person, from multiple narrators. #askagent

@kaitylynne13 Awesome! Thank you! And that’s amazing to hear because I think most of us are afraid to scare agents with all our projects pic.twitter.com/yW6g3KxouOI ALWAYS want to hear the ideas in the works! I don't want a one trick pony. I want to be there for the writer's career, helping them grow and succeed. If I can't connect with other works, I'm not the right agent for them #askagent

@kaitylynne13 What would you tell an author who is very confident in supporting materials (query letter, synopsis, pitch, etc.) and has drafted the manuscript for years, but gets no requests from Pitch Wars style contests and querying? Time to write a new book? Not right for market? If you've been querying the same project for more than a year, it's time to write something new. It may not be right for the market yet, it may just not be what editors are looking to acquire at the moment, or it may have edits needed you don't see #askagent

@kaitylynne13 Should you mention if your book is part of a series in your query? I see a few conflicting points on if you should include it or leave it out. Thanks in advance! 😊If it can stand alone (meaning, it doesn't HAVE to have a sequel to complete the plot), say that. If it's intended for a series, you should tell us that. #askagent I see a lot of "standalone with series potential"
