@BookEndsJessica #askagent If you queried an agent 5+ years ago who ultimately passed on the project and you want to re-query for a new project, do you mention in the new query that they previously requested a full from you?You can. I don’t think it matters either way. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica I write in Children's, MG, YA and adult. Are there agents who can rep me in all those? How do I find/query them. (everyone seems so niched)I would focus on one genre and see how it plays out. There are agents who do all, but I think you’d be narrowing your market too much. Just focus book-by-book. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica What genre would you consider a humerous childrens parody picture book for Brides? Also, do I need to have the illustrations? Getting mixed answers for this. Ty! #askaagent #askbook @BookEndsJessicaWithout seeing it I’d say a gift book for adults. And you would likely need to include illustrations. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica How does an author get their books into libraries? Does that fall on the agent or author? Also, are royalties involved? Does it count as a sale or simply an author getting their book into more people's hands? #askbookends #askagentA publisher will sell the book into the library market & yes it’s a sale #askagent

@BookEndsJessica @bookendslit @AgentJessicaA @NaomisLitPix #askagent Is it worth querying a book that is the first in a fantasy triology and not quite stand alone? The arc is resolved but there are as many questions as answers at the end.Sure! Plenty of agents (and BookEnds agents) are still looking for SFF YA. While you query, work on something else. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica @bookendslit @AgentJessicaA @NaomisLitPix I’ve heard it said that writers often go wrong in not writing for their audience. Does that problem manifest itself in plot, language, pacing, or something else? How do we avoid that mistake? That could be a combination of any and all of these. Best way to avoid this: read widely in your genre. And critique partners can help! #askagent

@SedrieDanielle @BookEndsJessica It might help to take a look at the cover copy on books you feel are similar to yours, ie those with large casts of characters, to see how they're getting the book across? #askagentFor example, take a look at how the Game of Thrones books are "pitched" in the cover copy. How do they bring all those strands together in a short blurb? #askagent

@wensday95 @BookEndsJessica I know I leave out A LOT in my queries because I only have 500 words to be convincing. I know I can do it. I'm just tired of being rejected lol. so I'm regrouping a bit. Thank you for answering me! 😊It might help to take a look at the cover copy on books you feel are similar to yours, ie those with large casts of characters, to see how they're getting the book across? #askagent

@BookEndsJessica @BookEndsKim @AgentJessicaA @NaomisLitPix @wensday95 What is your preference on synopsis length? I have seen several answers, including having more than one ready in case an agent asks. Thanks in advance! #askagentI think you're probably safest in the 3 to 5 page range. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica @BookEndsKim @AgentJessicaA @NaomisLitPix @wensday95 Are you familiar with the "Who Was" series of young reader biographies by Penguin? I'm wondering if they are arranged through agents or commissioned by editors at Penguin. Reacting to your #askagent session.I don't know how that specific series is handled, but generally, series like those are often commissioned by the editors, who then reach out to certain agents/authors they know. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #askagent At what point should you bring up series potential or if you book is the start of a trilogy? It depends on the genre and how dependent the manuscript's story is on future books. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica Hi Jessica! After being rejected by agents and publishers, I began using betas to see if it was likeable. Everyone who has read my book loves it, but I can't seem to get the powers that be to read it. Do agents read past the queries if they don't like them? #askagentHard to say for sure without seeing it, but it may be one of two problems. A) The query itself isn't strong enough at getting your story across / hooking an agent's interest, or B) The premise itself is something that agents aren't feeling is marketable right now. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica @BookEndsKim @AgentJessicaA @NaomisLitPix @wensday95 What’s your thoughts on the New Adult genre...Are there many agents specializing in this? Characters in early 20s are hard to pitch it feels. Too old for YA, not old enough for traditional genres. Thoughts? #askagentA few years ago, publishers really made a push in the New Adult market, but unfortunately didn't see a lot of success, especially in print. As a result, it's definitely harder to pitch these days. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica #askagent - is a book blurb/back cover copy separate from a query or synopsis? When agents ask you to provide one, do you just send the query? The back cover copy is essentially your query. A blurb is similar. A synopsis is a longer and detailed account of the entire book. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica @bookendslit @AgentJessicaA @NaomisLitPix Hope I'm not late; Question: Would it be ok to pitch a MS in its 3rd draft? I was thinking about going to the Philly writers workshop this November to pitch my novel. #askagentIf you feel it's ready to be published feel free to pitch. If you don't think it's yet ready to be published, then it's not yet ready to be pitched. Only you can decide that. #askagent

#askbookends #askagent I know editors at major publishing houses, and I could pitch them myself (one liked 2 pitches, declined 2 others), but I'd like to see if I could get a better deal with more competition. Better to go with the personal relationship alone, or shoot higher? You should think about what an agent could bring to the table after the deal too.. Contract negotiation, middle-man for the less pleasant conversations w/ publisher, career strategizing, growing your brand... A lot comes after the offer. Something to consider. #askagent

@markdsalzwedel Editors - even ones you know - won't take it personally when you sign an agent to help with any stage of the process. I always recommend going with an agent - we do a lot for that commission, and get a lot of details ironed out for you. #askagentAlso keep in mind that an editor works for the publisher, not for you. Agents work for you. Looking at a long-term publishing career is important. The sale itself is just one tiny detail in the process. #askagent
