@BookEndsJessica @jamerrson Hello. When an agent requests a full MS, what is the expected response time? I know that ”immediately!” is the first answer that comes to mind, but what if the author is doing a chapter rewrite and didn't expect the full request? Would 1 to 2 weeks be acceptable? The author shouldn't query if she isn't always expecting a full request. Once querying begins rewrites should end. That being said, I think submitting within one month is okay. Anything later & the agent might be less enthusiastic. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica @BookEndsJessica #askagent If an agent asks for a full and ultimately rejects without asking for an R&R, is it appropriate to resubmit after a rewrite or is a rejection a rejection a rejection? 😀 Thanks!I'm a big fan of "it never hurts." If it's an agent you really want to work with, resubmit. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica @Wannabe_Holly How about narrative non-fiction? The non-fiction bit becomes confusing as most agents don't explain what it is that they are looking for when it comes to this genre.#askagentNarrative nonfiction will typically need to be approached as if it were fiction. In other words, you'll need to write the entire book. #askagent

@UweStenderPhD How is the market for folk/fairytales? Not the Disney-fied ones, but ones in the style and darkness of the Bros Grimm, Andersen, films by Guillermo del Toro, etc.Folktales are the BEST expression of common humanity. There are "experts" who claim that folktales are different for different cultures. Truly, they are not. They are of human commonality. Thus, they will ALWAYS have appeal.

@UweStenderPhD Hi! How far into a full MS do you know if it's a yes or no? Do agents actually read the whole requested MS? Thank you!!I cannot speak for others. MOST of the time I know after 15 pages. Occasionally, I don't know until the very end.

@TracyMarchini I've read writers shouldn't query editors before agents because agents are turned off by a writer with mss that have already been turned down. While that makes sense to me, I'm curious how important you think that is...? #askagent#askagent It's not that we're turned off by a rejection, but we can't reshop it to a house that's already seen it, even if another editor at that house may have been another fit. If it's been seen by a bunch of editors already, our hands are tied in what we can do.

@inthesestones Hi, Moe! Saw on your MSWL you're a Showalter fan. Are you looking forward to The Darkest Warrior? It's coming out soon, and I have so many feels. (Overall, I can't wait to read it.) #askagentI am! Sadly I haven’t been able to keep up with her series :( (so many books, so little time) — but I do love the series! :^) #askagent

@inthesestones Hi! :) Are there any tropes in category romance that are a "no" for you? Also, I've been hearing that there's no point in getting an agent for category romances (publisher usually open to unsolicited material). What are your thoughts? #askagentI’m open to most — save things like secret babies. Kidnappings. Things that are very over the top. And there’s always a point for agents because we are here to negotiate contracts and are your advocate should anything go wrong! #askagent

#askagent If any agents are still willing to look at questions: when I finish polishing my new book to query-stage, should I offer it to the agents considering the full of my first, if they rep both genres? It's not a sequel, it's a new standalone.I prefer to consider one project per author at a time. If I reject the first one, I'm always happy to see the query for the second one. #askagent

@TracyMarchini If an agent has rejected your manuscript, is it appropriate to query them with a different manuscript in the future? Thanks so much! #askagentYep - plenty of authors don't end up with representation on the first book they query, and so it's not unusual to query the same agent for a few different projects over a period of time #askagent

@NaomisLitPix But I'm glad to hear there are more resources out there. I think for the 'new professional' they are rather hidden. Maybe there is a way to make the resources known without so much 'digging'. That could ease some of the tension out there. In my experience, the Twitter writing community is wildly connected thanks to hashtags such as #amwriting #amediting #amquerying #amrevising #querytip #askagent #tenqueries etc. Perhaps follow those if you're unsure of where to find resources.

How should an author go about deciding whether or not a market is already too saturated with a particular topic/theme when deciding which project to work next? We often believe our angle is different, but is there a point at which “different” isn’t enough? #askagentFollow agents&editors&watch their #MSWL posts. If a certain theme is being discussed often, it'll be easier than if not. That said, I still do see occasional people looking for vampires, and it doesn't get much more saturated than that. #askagent

@TracyMarchini We often hear that agents must fall in love with both the written work and the art. If you're a picture book author, but you're not sure if your art is ready... is it best to represent yourself as author only (& figure out the rest later) or as an author/illustrator? #askagentIf you don't think the art is ready and you're not wedded to the idea of illustrating all of your own books, then I would just query as an author first. You don't want someone to reject the whole package b/c of the art when they might have loved your words. #askagent

@TracyMarchini @BookEndsJessica @inthesestones Cool! I was hoping it would be something like that where it depended on the agent. Mainstream comics are weird where we pitch all our own stuff direct. I know alot of traditional publishers won't even look at stuff unless you are repped.Definitely depends on the agent and what you’re looking for in said agent in terms of your comic writing/goals. #askagent

@BookEndsJessica @jamerrson You addressed that a synopsis is critical when querying. Is there an ideal length? Many agents don't specify. #askagent Thanks for hanging out and answering our Qs!I don't think there's an ideal length. Shorter than 10 pages, ideally around 3-5. I prefer them short. #askagent

@ACArthur One thing I've found is agents often represent a broader range of genres than authors, even their own clients often know. #askagentGood point - can't assume that the agent doesn't rep this new genre, or wouldn't be interested in going out with this book with the help of colleagues, etc. #askagent
