@SecretAgentBri What's your favorite dark comedy in YA?One I just sold! That we will announce soon! Omg that was so unhelpful, sorry! 💩 Fave MG dark comedy is @HollyMMGrant's LEAGUE OF BEASTLY DREADFULS. Hard to come up with YA comps, what's yours? #askagent

@SecretAgentBri What makes you light up when you start a query letter? When it's well written, personally directed, and something fresh, that I haven't really seen before! #askagent

@SecretAgentBri Is it an automatic turn-off if someone lists critically-acclaimed, much-buzzed-about books as comps? Not necessarily, but I would definitely mix in some genre-appropriate, successful but perhaps not HUGE-huge comps. If you tell me that your book is TWILIGHT meets HARRY POTTER, I might give you just a liiiil side eye 👀 #askagent

@SecretAgentBri Does YA have to have romance to be enticing? #askagentNot necessarily, but I find a romance--or sexual exploration of some kind--often helps. It definitely doesn't have to be the central relationship! It can be a secondary, or even tertiary element. And it definitely does not have to be happily ever after. #askagent

@SecretAgentBri What’s your process for subbing to editors? Is there an established relationship? How does that all work?Yes ma'am! One of my favorite parts of the job is going to lunch with editors. We're all book nerds, and it's always fun. I get to know what they're looking for and try my best to deliver it #askagent

@UweStenderPhD It's about genre. My novels feature aliens and a few fantastical phenomena, but not the typical SF, not very scientific really. But literary fiction agents would reject bc they don't rep SFF. What to do?I would stick with SFF agents, or write another book. Or just keep querying until you find the right match. Never give up. Sometimes genre is putting writers in a tough spot. So ist das Leben.

@SecretAgentBri are portal fantasies dead on arrival in an agent’s inbox? #askagentIt's a crowded field, but not necessarily. If you feel yours is fresh/brings something new to the table, lead with that angle in your query letter #askagent

@SecretAgentBri If we are a first time novelist and realize we started agent submissions about four drafts too early #newbie, will agents consider re-submissions?I think so! Some of my current clients queried me with earlier drafts/books. Be up front and say "oops I initially sent this three drafts too soon, would love to have you re-consider" #askagent

@SecretAgentBri I have one question. I'm writing a YA novel with a 10 y/o protagonist. Agents keep telling me it's MG because of this, but the subject matter is DISTINCTLY not MG. It's a YA story. I can't change his age either for the story I want to tell. How would you query around this? That's a tough one. Teens don't typically "read down" re: protagonist age. You can get pretty dark in MG as long as there's hope, why not make it MG? Or just not include genre in your query, and trust your eventual agent to help you shape/decide? #askagent

@UweStenderPhD When you receive personalized rejections that say your piece not marketable, what do you put in the query to get past that? #askagentI don't know. Except what is not marketable for one agent, MAY be marketable for another.

@UweStenderPhD Also, is 1st person past tense hard to sell in MG?I would not worry about the tense. I would focus on the plot, the story, the characters, the writing.

@UweStenderPhD Is it better to write to an agent using their first or formal Mr./Mrs. and their last name? You can call me Uwe. Or Dr. Stender. Mr. Stender is my father. Ms. Stender is not I.

@UweStenderPhD Hello, Dr. Stender. Are parents present in MG necessarily a bad thing, say, if the plot involves the MC dealing with their divorce? Not necessarily, BUT I would focus on the MG kids, and not the parents.

@SecretAgentBri 3.14% of the time I understand the query process. I've gotten the nicest rejection letters. 'I'd buy this book, but it's not on my list', 'I love this story, but not on my list', 'I want to see you in print soon'. Q: do all agents get a similar list of upcoming trends? Thank you. pic.twitter.com/vabjAgq27BNot that I know of (if they do, I'm pissed I'm not on that list!) but I DO notice funny trend bubbles in my slush. If there's lots of VERY similar published work, it can be hard envision breaking out a new author. I gotta be able to answer "what's new & different here?" #askagent

@SecretAgentBri Q1: At a conference, I witnessed an agent do 50+ live query critiques. She spent less than 11 seconds on each (I timed them) before deciding if she would've even read the first pgs. Didn't care about voice or writing, just concepts & comps. What truly speaks to you in Q's?When scouting, I work the opposite way--I skim query letter v briefly and then skip down to the 10 page writing sample. If I love the writing, I go back and read the query letter SUPER carefully. Everyone works differently! #askagent
